Wayne R. Waz, MD, is Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, serving as Associate Chair for Education in the Department of Pediatrics since 2021. He has been Division Chief of Pediatric Nephrology at UBMD Pediatrics since 1999, Fellowship Program Director for Pediatric Nephrology since 2017 (previously 1999–2015), and Medical Director of the Chronic Dialysis Program at Oishei Children’s Hospital since 2017 (previously 1995–2008 at Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo). Additional roles include Medical Director of Connect Life since 2004, Attending Physician in Pediatric Nephrology since 1994, Director of Pediatric Medical Student Education from 2005 to 2020, Interim Chief of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care from 2021 to 2023, and Interim Division Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology from 2018 to 2019. His academic career at UB began as Assistant Professor from 1994 to 2000, followed by Clinical Assistant Professor from 2000 to 2004 and Clinical Associate Professor from 2004 to 2018.
Waz received his MD from University at Buffalo cum laude in 1988, BA in Biology and Society from Cornell University cum laude in 1984, completed Pediatrics internship in 1989, residency in 1991, and Pediatric Nephrology fellowship in 1994, all at University at Buffalo, along with certificates in Medical Educators from the Royal College of Physicians in 2009 and Simulation Essentials from UB Behling Simulation Center in 2012. His research specializations include medical education research and pediatric nephrology. Key publications feature “The adequacy of medical ethics education in a pediatrics training program” with Jennifer Henkind (Academic Medicine, 1995), “Nitric oxide metabolism following unilateral renal ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats” (Pediatric Nephrology, 1998), “Williams-Beuren syndrome: Renal manifestations” (Up-To-Date, 2018), “A Child With Anuric Acute Kidney Injury With Subsequent Hypertensive Encephalopathy: A Case Report” (Cureus, 2025), and book chapters such as “Ethical Principles in the Allocation of Human Organs” (2015) and “Tests of Renal Function” (2006). Major awards include Gold Humanism Honor Society Richard Sarkin/Emeritus Faculty Chapter Faculty Inductee (2018), University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Commendations for Teaching Excellence (2003, 2007, 2013), Faculty Teaching Award (2002), Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Award Honorable Mention (2013), Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and Buffalo Spree Magazine Top Doctors in Western New York (2014-2021).
