About Wei

Wei Li is the John T. MacGuire Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering within the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and B.S.Eng. from Tsinghua University. Dr. Li joined the UT Austin faculty in 2010, after serving as an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. His research interests encompass nano and biomaterials processing and manufacturing, biomedical design and manufacturing, clean energy technology, and manufacturing process monitoring and diagnosis using data analytics techniques. Current research topics include roll-to-roll manufacturing, polymer nanofoam and nanocomposites, in-vitro tissue model systems, and clean energy technology. His efforts have been funded by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, state agencies, and industry partners such as Chrysler, General Motors, and Boeing.

Professor Li received the NSF CAREER Award and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). He has served as board director of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME, Chair of the Biomanufacturing Technical Committee of the ASME Manufacturing Engineering Division, and associate editor of the ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering. Notable publications include "Roll-to-Roll Dry Transfer of Large-Scale Graphene" (Advanced Materials, 2022), "An adaptive machine learning method based on finite element analysis for ultra low-k chip package design" (IEEE Transactions on Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology, 2021), "A high-throughput three-dimensional cell culture platform for drug screening" (Bio-Design and Manufacturing, 2020), "Effects of process parameters on graphene growth via low-pressure chemical vapor deposition" (Journal of Micro and Nano-Manufacturing, 2020), "Dynamic Impedance Monitoring for Large Diameter Vessel Sealing Using Bipolar Electrosurgery" (Journal of Medical Devices, 2020), "Preparation, characterization and evaluation of cellulose nanocrystal/poly (lactic acid) in situ nanocomposite scaffolds for tissue engineering" (International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, 2019), and "Selective ultrasonic foaming of polymer for biomedical applications" (ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, 2008).
