Dr. Wei Yee Wee is a Lecturer in the Malaysia School of Science at Monash University. He received his B.Sc. in Bioinformatics from Multimedia University (MMU) in 2012 and continued with his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics at the University of Malaya. After obtaining his Ph.D., he served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Research in Biotechnology for Agriculture (CEBAR), University of Malaya. He has accumulated years of experience in bioinformatics research, including the establishment, design, and maintenance of bioinformatics laboratories. Currently, he contributes to education and research through multidisciplinary projects, research funding, and publications in ISI journals, with approximately 24 high-impact papers published since 2012.
Dr. Wei Yee Wee's research focuses on bioinformatics, involving various Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) projects such as whole genome and transcriptome analyses of eukaryotic genomes, bacterial genomes, and metagenomics. His skills include genome assembly, annotation, comparative gene studies, SNP variant identification and effect prediction, differential gene expression analysis, pan-genome analysis, phylogenetic tree analysis, and prophage identification. He developed the Pairwise Genome Comparison (PGC) tool, which visualizes pairwise genome alignments in a circular layout, and the Pathogenomics Profiling Tool (PathoProT), for screening virulence genes; both are integrated into databases like VibrioBase and HelicoBase. Current research projects encompass whole genome analysis of Mycobacterium cosmeticum and transcriptomic analysis of Boesenbergia rotunda. Key publications include "Screening of heat stress-tolerant weedy rice and SNP identification of heat-tolerance-related genes" (2024), "Genome characterization and taxonomy of Actinomyces acetigenes sp. nov., and Actinomyces stomatis sp. nov." (2023), "Genome Assembly and Analysis of the Flavonoid and Phenylpropanoid Biosynthetic Pathways in Fingerroot Ginger (Boesenbergia rotunda)" (2022), and "A collective statement in support of saving pangolins" (2022). He has earned the 2024 PVC's Award for Excellence in Education, Gold Medals in education categories at ITEX’20 and INNOVATORS2022 for Learnux, the ultimate Linux board game, Bronze and Silver Medals for teaching innovations, and serves as Editor-in-Chief for mSystems (October-November 2024). He teaches courses such as SCI1020 Introduction to Statistical Reasoning, BIO1011 Biology 1, and others.
