William Heiden serves as part-time faculty in the Politics, Economics, and International Studies department at the University of Hartford's College of Arts and Sciences. His teaching includes courses on power and politics in America, contemporary American studies, and independent studies in politics. Heiden was awarded the 2021 Sustained Excellence in Teaching Award for Part-Time Faculty, commended for his creative and inclusive teaching style that promotes collaboration between academic and student services staff, engages students authentically, and encourages personal and professional growth through real-world connections.
Heiden's research interests include American culture and discourse, poverty and anti-poverty efforts, and technology. His publication 'Coopting Cops with Maps: The Rhetorical Power of Cartography in Modern Policing' in Cartographica examines the New York Police Department's rhetorical use of maps in crime reduction strategies. He presented 'RELIGION IN SUPPORT OF AMERICANISM: LIFE Magazine in the 1950s' at the New England Historical Association in 2020, analyzing 520 issues and identifying 665 articles linking religion to American values. In applied technology research, Heiden co-authored 'Intermittent circulation of simplified deep flow technique hydroponic system increases yield efficiency and allows application of systems without electricity in Haiti' in Agriculture & Food Security (2023), showing improved yields for lettuce and bell peppers in low-electricity settings suitable for Haiti. He also published 'DFT hydroponic system for lettuce and pepper production with limited electricity' on agriRxiv (2022), advancing deep flow technique optimizations for sustainable agriculture and food security.
