Dr Willy Low serves as Senior Lecturer and Clinical Dean at Curtin Medical School within the Faculty of Health Sciences at Curtin University. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Western Australia and holds Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). Originally from Malaysia, Low moved to Perth in 2003, completing his internship and residency at Royal Perth Hospital. He completed surgical training in Western Australia, followed by two years of post-fellowship training in upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery in Sydney. This advanced training occurred at Bankstown Hospital, a high-volume unit for upper gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary cancer, and St. George Hospital, Australia's highest volume bariatric hospital offering minimally invasive upper gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgeries. Low subsequently practiced in Albany and the Great Southern region of Western Australia, serving the local community for several years before relocating to Perth.
As a consultant upper gastrointestinal, bariatric, general, and laparoscopic surgeon, Low provides elective and emergency general surgery services. He operates privately at Hollywood Private Hospital, St John of God Subiaco Hospital, and Albany Day Hospital, and holds public appointments at Rockingham General Hospital, Albany Regional Hospital, and Katanning Hospital. His clinical expertise includes bariatric surgery including primary and revisional procedures, management of reflux symptoms with diagnostic gastroscopy and anti-reflux surgeries such as laparoscopic fundoplication, laparoscopic hiatus hernia repair, biliary surgery, abdominal wall and inguinal hernia repairs, gallbladder surgery including laparoscopic cholecystectomies, therapeutic endoscopies, and skin cancer management. Low is a member of General Surgeons Australia, Australia and New Zealand Gastro-Oesophageal Surgery Association (ANZGOSA), Australia and New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society (ANZMOSS), and Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA). He serves as Australian coordinator for The Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society (TUGSS) and participates in international research collaborations. Key publications co-authored by Low include 'The Management of an Intraperitoneal Leak Following Transgastric Stenting of a Pancreatic Pseudocyst' (Cureus, 2020) and 'Modified Longmire procedure: a novel approach to bile duct injury repair' (ANZ Journal of Surgery, 2018).
