Wojciech Lorenc is Professor of Mass Communication and Coordinator of the BFA in Film and TV Production in the Department of Mass Communication at Sam Houston State University, a position he has held since 2023. From 2021 to 2023, he served as Chair of the department, and prior to that as Associate Professor from 2017 to 2023. His earlier academic appointments include Assistant Professor of Communication and Coordinator of the Integrated Media Track at Columbus State University (2016–2017), Assistant Professor of Creative Media and Coordinator of the Transmedia, Film, Television & Digital Media Track at University of Hawaiʻi West Oʻahu (2014–2016), and Assistant Professor of Television and Coordinator of the Internet and Mobile Media Track at Columbia College Chicago (2010–2014). He also worked as Adjunct Professor and Digital Media Technologist at Columbia College Chicago from 2003 to 2010. Lorenc earned an MFA in Digital Cinema from DePaul University in 2011 and a BA in Film/Video from Columbia College Chicago in 2002.
His research specializations include directing for film, television, and internet/mobile media; cinematography; directing for visual effects; experimental transmedia, emerging media, immersive media, and virtual reality production; and internet and mobile media production, distribution, and monetization. Lorenc has taught and devised graduate and undergraduate courses such as MCOM 5311 Emerging Media Technologies, MCOM 6311 Advanced Production in Emerging Media, MCOM 3359 Directing for Film and TV, MCOM 3352 Cinematography, and MCOM 6310 Advanced Multimedia Production at Sam Houston State University, among many others at previous institutions. Key publications include the conference paper “Integrating Virtual Reality Technology and 360 Video into a Hybrid Curriculum with Student-Led Learning Techniques. A Case Study of Low Budget VR and 360 Video Adoption in a Classroom” (INTED2019 Proceedings, 2019). Lorenc has directed and produced numerous films and VR projects, including feature documentaries The Innocents (2022; awards: Best Feature Film, San Angelo Revolution Film Festival; Audience Choice Award, Austin Under the Stars Film Festival) and Fearless (2021; Best Texas Film, Cine Las Americas International Film Festival; Best Documentary, Wales International Film Festival); shorts Jayro (2021), The Drone (2018; Best Sci-Fi Comedy Short, Miami International Science Fiction Film Festival), and Shaholly (2018; Best Director, Oregon Cinema Arts Film Festival); and VR works like Television Studio Production: Introduction (2019; Platinum Hermes Award). These have garnered dozens of awards at international festivals, including Platinum Hermes, Silver Remi WorldFest-Houston, and Telly Awards. He has chaired thesis committees, served on the Virtual Reality Task Force, and acted as Festival Director for Stars of Tomorrow Film Awards at Sam Houston State University.
