Prof. Dr. Xiao-Hua Qin is Assistant Professor of Biomaterials Engineering at the Institute for Biomechanics in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich, where he leads the Biomaterials Engineering group and co-leads the Laboratory for Bone Biomechanics. He was appointed to this position in late 2023, having previously served as Senior Researcher and Lecturer at ETH Zurich. His research focuses on developing novel biomaterials and advanced manufacturing processes, including organoid technology and 3D bioprinting, for applications in biomedicine, with particular emphasis on in vitro organoid models of the musculoskeletal system.
Qin earned his PhD in Synthetic Polymer Chemistry from Technische Universität Wien in 2014. Prior to his current role, he held positions including Group Lead and Lecturer at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology from 2015 to 2018 and a postdoctoral fellowship at ETH Zurich from 2018 to 2019. He received an ERC Starting Grant in 2022, subsidized by SERI of Switzerland, as well as the ETH Zurich Career Seed Award in 2019, a Best Poster Prize at the Nature Conference on Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine in 2016, and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship. Qin has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and holds patents, two of which are in use in the medical technology industry. His work strengthens connections between biomaterials engineering, biomechanics, and medical technology.
