About Xiaohua

Xiaohua (Adam) Wei is a professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. He holds a PhD and MSc in Forest Ecology from Northeast Forestry University in Harbin, China, completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Forest Ecology at the University of British Columbia, and undertook training in GIS Land Use Planning and Watershed Assessment at CSIRO in Canberra, Australia. His research focuses on eco-hydrological processes in forested watersheds, including the effects of forest disturbance such as timber harvesting and wildfire on hydrology, cumulative hydrological impacts in large watersheds, interactions between forest change, climate, and water resources, and sustainable forest management for hydrology, carbon budgets, and aquatic habitat. Wei teaches courses on forest hydrology and watershed ecosystem processes and management, including EESC 213 Introductory Forest Science and Management, EESC 313 Management of Forested Watersheds, and EESC 413 Analytical Methods in Hydrology.

He serves as Watershed Ecosystem Cluster Leader and is a Registered Professional Forester in British Columbia. Wei previously coordinated the IUFRO Task Force on Forests, Soil and Water Interactions from 2016 to 2024 and holds editorial roles as Associate Editor of Ecohydrology and editorial member of Ecosystem Health and Sustainability. His key publications include work in Science on deforestation, forestation, and water supply; a book on Watershed Ecosystems: Processes and Management (second edition, 2023); and papers in journals such as Water Resources Research, Forest Ecology and Management, Nature Communications, and Global Change Biology addressing hydrological sensitivities to forest changes and cumulative disturbance effects. Wei has contributed to advancing understanding of watershed ecosystem science through interdisciplinary approaches at various spatial and temporal scales.
