About Yang

Professor Yang Zhang is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the School of Computing, National University of Singapore (NUS). He holds joint appointments as Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and at the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore. Prior to joining NUS, he was a Professor at the University of Michigan with appointments in the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics, the Department of Biological Chemistry, and the Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering.

His research focuses on artificial intelligence and machine learning for biomolecular modeling, including protein and RNA folding and structure prediction, as well as protein, RNA, and peptide sequence design. The I-TASSER algorithm developed in his laboratory has been consistently ranked among the most accurate automated protein structure prediction methods in CASP experiments. Dr. Zhang has received the Alfred P. Sloan Award, the U.S. National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and the University of Michigan Basic Science Research Award. He has been recognized eight times as a Thomson Reuters/Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher since 2015. Key recent publications include "Deep-learning-based single-domain and multidomain protein structure prediction with D-I-TASSER" in Nature Biotechnology (2025), "US-align: a graphic and command line protocol for quick and accurate comparisons of protein and nucleic acid structures" in Nature Protocols (2025), and multiple papers in Nature Methods and Nature Communications on protein structure prediction and related topics.
