Yaoyi Xi, Ph.D., serves as the William and Karen Brack Endowed Professor of Finance and Associate Professor in the Finance Department at the Fowler College of Business, San Diego State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Kansas and joined San Diego State University in 2018, following teaching experience there. In 2022, he received tenure and promotion to associate professor. Xi teaches courses including Fundamentals of Finance, Financial Analysis and Management case studies, and previously instructed Financial Markets and Intermediaries at the University of Kansas. His research centers on empirical corporate finance, with specific interests in behavioral finance, politics and finance, network effects, corporate disclosures, insider trading, and financial analysts.
Xi's scholarship has been published in premier academic journals. Notable works include 'Political Partisan Bias in Fund Portfolios' in the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis (2020), recognized as one of the journal's Top 5 High Impact Papers that year and covered by outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, Reuters, CNBC, Money, and Barron's; 'Political Euphoria and Corporate Disclosures: An Investigation of CEO Partisan Alignment with the President of the United States' in the Journal of Accounting and Economics (2023, with Mazhar Arikan, Mehmet Kara, and Adi Masli); 'CFO Social Capital, Liquidity Management, and the Market Value of Cash' in the Journal of Banking and Finance (2024, with Christopher Anderson and M. Babajide Wintoki); 'Insider Trading and the Legal Expertise of Corporate Executives' in the Journal of Banking and Finance (2021, with Chao Jiang and M. Babajide Wintoki); 'Friendly Directors and the Cost of Regulatory Compliance' in the Journal of Corporate Finance (2019, with M. Babajide Wintoki); and 'Short-term Performance of U.S.-bound Chinese IPOs' in The Financial Review (2015, with Stephen Haggard and Brian Walkup). Forthcoming is 'Highly Skilled Immigrants and Local Housing Prices: Evidence from the H-1B Visa Lottery' in the Journal of Real Estate Research. His contributions advance understanding of political influences on financial decisions and corporate behaviors.
