Yasuo Sugiura serves as President and Professor at Nagoya University of Arts and Sciences, holding positions in the Faculty of Human Care, Department of Child Care, and concurrently as Professor in the Graduate School of Child Care Research since April 2013. Born in 1947, he graduated from Nagoya University School of Medicine in March 1971, earning his Medical Doctor degree, and completed the doctoral program at Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine in November 1975, obtaining his Doctor of Medicine. His extensive career encompasses serving as Assistant in the Department of Anatomy I at Nagoya University School of Medicine from 1975 to 1982, Lecturer in Basic Medical Sciences at the University of Tsukuba from 1982 to 1988, Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine from 1984 to 1986, Professor in the Department of Anatomy I at Fukushima Medical University from 1988 to 1996, and Professor in the Department of Anatomy II (Functional Histology) at Nagoya University School of Medicine from 1996 to 2010. During his tenure at Nagoya University, he also acted as Head of the Medical Sciences Research Institute and Dean of the School of Medicine from 2003 to 2005, Director and Vice President from 2005 to 2009, and Advisor to the President from 2009 to 2010. Prior to joining Nagoya University of Arts and Sciences, he was Superintendent of the Aichi Prefectural Colony for Persons with Disabilities from 2010 to 2013.
Sugiura's research specializations lie in neuroanatomy and pain science, with a current focus on the functional morphology of pain. Notable publications include 'Gangliosides play pivotal roles in the regulation of complement systems and in the maintenance of integrity in nerve tissues' (PNAS, 2009), 'TRP channels and ASICs mediate mechanical hyperalgesia in models of inflammatory muscle pain and delayed onset muscle soreness' (Pain, 2008), 'Involvement of ATP and its receptors on nociception in rat model of masseter muscle pain' (Pain, 2008), 'Atrophy of submandibular gland by the duct ligation and a blockade of SP receptor in rats' (Nagoya Journal of Medical Sciences, 2016), and the co-authored book '子どもの育ちとケアを考える' (Gakubunsha, 2019). He has contributed to academic societies as Councillor and Director of the Japanese Association of Anatomists and Japanese Pain Society, and participated in various committees including grant reviews, university evaluations, and ethics reviews. Sugiura holds a physician's license and remains active in promoting medical education and body donation initiatives.
