About Yayoi

Yayoi Kamakura is a distinguished nursing scholar whose research centers on dysphagia rehabilitation, aspiration pneumonia prevention, and swallowing care interventions. Her contributions include the development of pyriform sinus suctioning programs aimed at reducing aspiration risks during acute stroke recovery, as detailed in her 2017 publication 'Development of Pyriform Sinus Suctioning Programs for Aspiration Pneumonia Prevention During the Acute Stroke.' Kamakura has also advanced esophageal speech training methodologies, exploring systems and patient needs post-laryngectomy in a 2024 study titled 'Esophageal speech training system and needs for esophageal speech training in a laryngectomy patient association in Japan.' Additionally, she co-authored the 'Japanese clinical practice guidelines for aspiration and pharyngeal residual assessment during eating and swallowing for nursing care' in 2022, providing essential frameworks for nursing practices in Japan.

Throughout her career, Kamakura has collaborated closely with researchers from the School of Nursing & Health at Aichi Prefectural University, including Junko Fukada, Naomi Watanabe, and Yumiko Momose, on projects examining factors influencing cancer patients' surgical decisions, reinforcing nurses' helping behaviors, and evaluating swallowing therapy efficacy in acute stroke patients. Notable works include 'Effectiveness of Swallowing Care on Safe Oral Intake Using the New Assessment Tool for Acute Stroke Patients' (2020), 'Clinical benefits of a swallowing intervention for esophageal cancer patients after esophagectomy' (2020), and 'Efficacy of an education program for nurses that concerns the use of point-of-care ultrasound to monitor for aspiration and pharyngeal post-swallow residue' (2020). She has held significant leadership positions, such as deputy chair of the Japanese Society of Dysphagia Rehabilitation, councilor of the Japan Academy of Nursing Science, and former president of the Japan Academy of Nursing Science. Previously serving as president of the Japanese Red Cross Toyota College of Nursing, her work has influenced nursing education and clinical guidelines, with over 26 research outputs and 127 citations documented on ResearchGate.
