About Yiping

Y. Joseph Woo, also known as Joseph Woo or Yiping Woo, serves as the Norman E. Shumway Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and professor by courtesy of Bioengineering at Stanford University. He is professor and chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine and associate director of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. Dr. Woo earned a BS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1988 and an MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1992. He completed his residency and fellowship training in surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also served as chief resident.

Dr. Woo specializes in complex mitral and aortic valve repair, thoracic aortic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, and minimally invasive cardiac procedures. As a physician-scientist, he has led NIH-funded research on vascular stem cell therapies and stem cell administration during coronary artery bypass grafting and left ventricular assist device implantation, and he holds patents for heart-related medical devices and techniques. He has co-authored more than 510 peer-reviewed articles and serves as president of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. His honors include the American Heart Association’s 2021 Clinical Research Prize. He has held leadership roles on numerous professional committees and editorial boards, including associate editor of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
