Yoko Mimura, Ph.D., is Professor of Consumer Affairs in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at California State University, Northridge, a position she has held since August 2021. She previously served as Associate Professor from 2016 to 2021 and Assistant Professor from 2012 to 2016 at the same institution. Additionally, she has been the Graduate Coordinator for the department since 2018. Before joining CSUN, Mimura worked as a Research Professional in the Department of Housing and Consumer Economics at the University of Georgia from 2002 to 2011, and as a Research Technician there from 1998 to 2001. She holds a Ph.D. in Housing and Consumer Economics (2001) and an M.S. in Home Management, Housing, and Consumer Economics (1994) from the University of Georgia, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Laws and Political Science (1991) from Seikei University in Tokyo, Japan. In 2022, she became an Accredited Financial Counselor®.
Mimura's academic interests center on household finances, poverty and economic hardships, housing for special populations, and family and consumer sciences, with a focus on areas relevant to Business & Economics such as consumer savings, expenditures, and financial behaviors. Her extensive publication record includes "Save Today for a Happier Tomorrow: Associations Between Happiness and Financial Preparation in Japan" (Journal of Happiness Studies, 2023); "Associations between financial transfer from grandparents and family expenditures for children’s precollege education in Japan" (Journal of Family and Economic Issues, 2021); "Antecedents of financial practices among Latina/o university students" (Journal of Personal Finance, 2020); "Resource well-being among family child care business owners" (Journal of Family and Economic Issues, 2019); "Financial information source, knowledge, and practices of college students from diverse backgrounds" (Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning, 2015); "Variations in retirement account holdings among women: Native and immigrants in the U.S." (International Journal of Business and Finance Research, 2013); and "Housing cost burden, poverty status, and economic hardship among low-income families" (Journal of Family and Economic Issues, 2008), among others. She has been recognized as an Outstanding Reviewer for the Journal of Personal Finance in both 2018 and 2019.
