Youngsoo Jang is a Lecturer in the School of Economics at the University of Queensland. He earned his PhD in Economics from The Ohio State University in 2017, an MA in Economics from the same university in 2012, and a BA in Economics, summa cum laude, from Sogang University, Korea, in 2011. Before joining the University of Queensland, Jang held positions as an Assistant Professor at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and as an Associate Professor without tenure at Yonsei University School of Economics in Seoul, Korea.
Jang's academic interests center on macroeconomics, fiscal and public policies, family economics, economic inequality, household bankruptcy, and computational methods. His research addresses tax-and-transfer progressivity and its effects on business cycles, credit and default risks in optimal health insurance, generalized endogenous grid methods for default risk models, aggregate and intergenerational implications of school closures, mortality regressivity in pension design, and redistribution under government commitment. Key publications include 'Tax-and-transfer progressivity and business cycles' in Quantitative Economics (2023, with Takeki Sunakawa and Minchul Yum), 'Credit, Default, and Optimal Health Insurance' in International Economic Review (2022), and 'A Generalized Endogenous Grid Method for Default Risk Models' in Journal of Money, Credit and Banking (2024, with Soyoung Lee). At the University of Queensland, he serves as course coordinator and lecturer for Macroeconomics B (ECON6040), Macroeconomics (ECON2020), and Advanced Macroeconomics (ECON7950), and contributes to honours supervision and macroeconomics seminar series.
