About Yu

Professor Yu Huang is a Chair Professor in Journalism, Media and Communication and Dean of the Graduate School at Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU), within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a BA degree in Journalism and an MA in Communication Studies from Renmin University of China, and a PhD from the University of Westminster, United Kingdom, obtained in 1993. Huang joined Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) in 1994 as a Lecturer, advancing to Chair Professor over his career. At HKBU, he served in prominent administrative roles, including Executive Associate Dean of the Graduate School from 2011 to 2013, Dean of the School of Communication from 2013 to 2022, Associate Vice-President from 2014 to 2022, and Senior Advisor to the President, offering guidance on development and strategic initiatives. In February 2024, he transitioned to BNBU, leveraging nearly 30 years of expertise in higher education management and scholarship.

Huang's academic interests center on journalism, media, and communication, including mass media in Hong Kong and mainland China, media representation and construction, social relations and media changes, the political economy of media and communication studies, news and media's influence on social development, and media in Chinese contexts. He has produced over 100 articles in prestigious international journals and authored more than 10 scholarly books in English and Chinese. Through editorial contributions, he has advanced the scholarly discourse in his field. In May 2023, the Chinese Communication Association bestowed upon him the Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional impact. Huang actively fosters international academic exchanges, having led study tours such as one to the Middle East in 2024 involving students from HKBU and BNBU, and promotes collaborations across the Greater Bay Area to enhance students' global experiences.
