Yuhang Xing is an Associate Professor of Finance in the Business & Economics faculty at Rice University’s Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, where she joined as Assistant Professor in July 2003 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in July 2009. Prior to Rice, she served as Instructor at Columbia University Graduate School of Business in 2002. She holds a Ph.D. in Finance with distinction from Columbia University Graduate School of Business (2003), an M.S. in Decision Science and Economics from Northwestern University (1998), and a B.A. in Economics with honors from Peking University (1997). Since June 2012, Xing has been a Fellow and Special Term Faculty at the China Academy of Financial Research (SAIF). Her research focuses on empirical asset pricing, encompassing topics such as downside risk, idiosyncratic volatility, default risk, taxes on tax-exempt bonds, and investor behavior regarding overpriced stocks.
Professor Xing’s scholarly contributions have appeared in premier finance journals, including the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. Select publications include “The Cross-Section of Volatility and Expected Returns” (Journal of Finance, 2006, with Andrew Ang, Robert Hodrick, and Xiaoyan Zhang), which identifies a negative relation between stock volatility and expected returns; “Downside Risk” (Review of Financial Studies, 2006, with Andrew Ang and Joseph Chen); “High Idiosyncratic Volatility and Low Returns: International and Further U.S. Evidence” (Journal of Financial Economics, 2009, with Andrew Ang, Robert Hodrick, and Xiaoyan Zhang); “Death and Jackpot: Why do Individual Investors Hold Overpriced Stocks?” (Journal of Financial Economics, 2014, with Jennifer Conrad and Nishad Kapadia); “Default Risk and Equity Returns” (Journal of Finance, 2004, with Maria Vassalou); and “Taxes on Tax-exempt Bonds” (Journal of Finance, 2010, with Andrew Ang and Vineer Bhansali). She has earned the Excellence in Research award from the Jones School of Management (2007), Lehman Brothers Fellowship for Research Excellence in Finance (2002), Q-Group Grant (2001), and various scholarships including the Columbia Business School Graduate Scholarship (2001) and Peking University Scholarship (1993-1997). Xing has presented at conferences such as the American Finance Association, Western Finance Association, and China International Conference in Finance, delivered seminars at institutions like Yale University, Columbia University, and University of California San Diego, and refereed for top journals including the Journal of Finance and Review of Financial Studies.
