About Zach

Zach Wood-Doughty is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Computer Science at Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering. He joined the university in 2021 as a McCormick Teaching Postdoc and was promoted to his current position in 2022. Wood-Doughty earned a PhD in Computer Science and an MSE in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University in 2021 and 2017, respectively, and a BA in Computer Science and Mathematics from Carleton College.

His research focuses on natural language processing and machine learning applications in high-stakes settings, including causal inference in NLP, as well as the robustness, fairness, and interpretability of NLP models. He teaches courses such as Fairness in Machine Learning. Wood-Doughty has co-authored publications including works on leveraging machine learning for hospital readmission prediction and other topics in image processing and audio analysis. He serves as an instructor and coordinator for relevant computer science courses at Northwestern.
