Dr. Zifirdaus (Zi.) Adnan is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Indonesian Studies in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at the University of New England. A highly qualified and experienced language teacher, academic supervisor, and researcher, he has taught English and Indonesian languages and cultures for over 30 years at various institutions in Australia and Indonesia. His career commenced in Indonesia with the Save the Children and Experiment in International Living Program, teaching English and Western culture at the Galang Refugee Camp, as well as at a prestigious private school in Padang, West Sumatra. In Australia, Adnan taught at the RAAF School of Languages in Point Cook, Victoria; the University of Melbourne and RMIT in Melbourne, Victoria; Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia from 1994 to 2001; and the University of New England in Armidale, New South Wales since 2002. He currently supervises six PhD students and delivers units such as Indonesian Contemporary Culture, Cultural Expressions in Modern Asia, Indonesian Religious History, and Islam in Indonesia.
Adnan holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics and Intercultural Education from Curtin University, an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Melbourne, a BA (Honours) in Modern Asian Studies focusing on cultural, social, and political studies of Asia especially Indonesia from Griffith University, a Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education with High Distinction from Murdoch University, and an SP (S1) Sarjana Pendidikan from IKIP Padang, Indonesia. His research specializations include Applied Linguistics, Language Education, Discourse and Genre Analysis of Academic Writing, Critical Discourse Analysis, Radicalism and Terrorism, Islam, State and Society in Indonesia. He has earned awards for teaching excellence: nomination for the Vice Chancellor's Teaching Award at Murdoch University in 2000 and the School Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching at the University of New England in 2011. Key publications encompass books Panduan Menembus Jurnal Internasional (2020), Rhetorical Patterns of Indonesian Research Articles in Selected Humanities Disciplines (2010), and Merebut Hati Audiens Internasional.
