Zuill Bailey serves as Professor of Cello and Director of the Center for Arts Entrepreneurship in the Department of Music within Arts and Culture at the University of Texas at El Paso, where he joined the faculty in 2004. A multiple Grammy Award-winning cellist, he is internationally renowned as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and teacher, celebrated for his artistry, technical mastery, and engaging presence. Bailey earned his Bachelor’s degree from the Peabody Conservatory and Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School, with principal studies under Loran Stephenson, Stephen Kates, and Joel Krosnick. He performs on the 1693 Matteo Gofriller cello, previously owned by Mischa Schneider of the Budapest String Quartet.
Bailey has appeared as concerto soloist with orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Dallas Symphony, and international ensembles such as the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and Israel Philharmonic, collaborating with conductors like Itzhak Perlman, Alan Gilbert, Neeme Järvi, and Giancarlo Guerrero, as well as artists including Leon Fleisher, Jaime Laredo, and Janos Starker. Venues encompass Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Disney Hall, and festivals like Ravinia, Santa Fe, Interlochen, and Manchester Cello Festival. He has given U.S. and world premieres of works by composers such as Michael Daugherty, Nico Muhly, Lowell Liebermann, and Roberto Sierra. His discography exceeds twenty recordings, including the 2017 Grammy-winning Tales of Hemingway (also earning Grammys for Best Classical Composition and Best Classical Compendium), Bach Cello Suites, Britten Cello Symphony and Sonata, Elgar and Dvořák Cello Concertos (Gramophone reference recording), Bloch Schelomo, and Brahms cello works. Additional honors include Classical Recording Foundation Awards for 2006 and 2007, and 2014 Johns Hopkins University Distinguished Alumni recognition. Bailey also directs El Paso Pro-Musica, Sitka Summer Music Festival, Northwest Bach Festival, and others, while publishing Zuill Bailey Performance Editions through Kalmus Music Masters. At UTEP, he advances arts entrepreneurship training for students.
