Associate Professor Zuocheng Zhang is a member of the English, Literacies and Language Education team within the School of Education at the University of New England. He earned his BA from Xi'an International Studies University, MA from Northwestern Polytechnical University in China, and PhD from the University of Sydney in Australia. Before joining UNE, he was a full professor in applied linguistics at the University of International Business and Economics in China, where he contributed significantly to the establishment of the nationally accredited Business English Major course. At UNE, his primary teaching areas encompass TESOL education, disciplinary literacies, and teaching for cultural diversity. He leads the Interculturality and Education Strategic Research Group in the School of Education and is a member of the Language, Literacy and Pedagogy Strategic Research Group.
Zhang's research specializations include discipline-based literacy practices, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teacher development, construction of prestige on university websites, interdisciplinarity in Business English studies, and transcultural agency in international students and graduates. He has received research grants from the National Office for Philosophy and Social Sciences in China to study multimodal discourses and several internal grants from UNE for investigations into international student education. His scholarly output features books such as Text-based Interviews and the Construction of Professional Identity: Researching Student Writing with Business English Students and International Business Professionals (2025, SAGE), International Student Education in Tertiary Settings: Interrogating Programs and Processes in Diverse Contexts (editor, 2021, Routledge), and Learning Business English in China: The Construction of Professional Identity (2017). Notable journal articles include Towards an Integrated Approach to Teaching Business English: A Chinese Experience (2007, English for Specific Purposes, 200 citations), Business English Students Learning to Write for International Business: What Do International Business Practitioners Have to Say about Their Texts? (2013, English for Specific Purposes, 108 citations), and Early Childhood Educators’ Pedagogical Knowledge for Effective Practice in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Contexts (2025, Early Childhood Education Journal). His publications have accumulated over 980 citations on Google Scholar, reflecting his influence in applied linguistics, ESP, and Business English pedagogy.
