Women receive the diagnosis more often than men, though men who develop it frequently report more pronounced pain and swelling. The typical age range falls between the twenties and fifties, yet cases appear across adulthood. Pregnancy and the use of oral contraceptives appear more frequently in the histories of women who become symptomatic, likely because they add further pressure or clotting risk to an already narrowed vein. The exact share of the population living with the compression is unknown because most remain without symptoms, yet studies of people who develop left-sided clots show the anatomical feature in a meaningful minority.

When no clot is present and symptoms are mild, conservative steps such as compression stockings, leg elevation, and activity guidance often suffice. Once a clot forms or symptoms persist, anticoagulation addresses the immediate clotting risk. For the compression itself, endovascular approaches have become the most common route. A catheter reaches the narrowed vein, a balloon widens it, and a stent holds the channel open.
