The first mistake most people make when learning something new is mistaking busyness for progress. I once spent a whole weekend rereading a set of study notes and colouring the margins. By Sunday night the pages looked extremely impressive. On Monday I could recall almost nothing without the pages in front of me. I had, in effect, given my notes a very pleasant bath and then complained that they couldn't swim.
That is the hidden cost of the most common study habits. They make you feel fluent while the material slips away. The good news is that decades of research in cognitive psychology point to a small set of methods that are less comfortable in the moment but far more durable. They work because they force your brain to rebuild knowledge rather than simply recognise it.
Study Habits That Feel Good but Do Very Little
Rereading and highlighting feel useful because they make the material familiar. None of that familiarity necessarily means you can pull the answer out under test conditions. A little bit of knowing often hides a lot of forgetting. You may have been told you're a visual learner or an auditory learner, and those labels feel true, but studies have repeatedly failed to find that matching a study method to a preferred style improves outcomes. The exact same retrieval and spacing principles consistently do.
Nobody tells you that the smoother a study session feels, the less likely it is to stick. Genuine learning usually involves a small jolt of effort. That effort is the point, not a bug. When the page looks neat and you nod along, you're often just rehearsing recognition. Recognition is the brain's way of saying, yes, I have seen this before. Recall is the harder, more valuable sentence: I can produce this from scratch.
Retrieval Practice: Pull Answers Out Instead of Pushing Them In
The technique with the strongest evidence has a clinical-sounding name: retrieval practice. In plain language, it means closing the book and trying to remember. Read a page once, put it away, then write or say everything you can remember. It should feel a little uncomfortable. That discomfort is the brain strengthening the memory.
A large review by John Dunlosky and colleagues gave practice testing and distributed practice the highest utility ratings among ten common techniques. In another experiment published in Science, students who read a passage and then took a recall test remembered more a week later than students who drew concept maps, even though the concept mappers felt they had learned more. Waiting until you think you know it is not enough; test the knowledge before it feels ready.

- Read one page or watch one short segment without taking notes.
- Close the source.
- Write everything you remember, including gaps and likely errors.
- Reopen the source and check each point you missed.
- Repeat the recall attempt a day later before adding new material.
The goal is not to complete a beautiful summary. It's to expose the holes before the exam or the real task does.
Spacing: Let Yourself Almost Forget
Spaced practice means separating study sessions over days rather than cramming them into one evening. When you leave a gap between reviews, you partly forget. That small lapse makes the next recall harder, and harder recall produces more durable memory. Cramming can look like it works because it holds information briefly, but the gains decay fast. Research on distributed practice has shown repeatedly that spreading the same amount of study time across longer intervals improves long-term retention.
Try a simple sequence: learn the material on Tuesday, close-book test yourself on Thursday, take a longer mixed recall session on Saturday, then do a final correction pass on Monday. This doesn't double your study time; it rearranges it. The kitchen-table rule I use is blunt: if you can't explain the point without the page, you haven't finished studying it.
Interleaving: Mix the Material So You Can't Fake It
If you're learning to solve different types of problems, don't practice ten of one type and then ten of the next. Mix them. Interleaving, as researchers call it, makes you stop and identify which method applies. That extra decision feels slow. It's also the exact skill you'll need later, when problems don't arrive with a label above them.
For languages, interleaving might mean mixing verb forms and vocabulary instead of staying in one comfortable set. For procedural work, it means switching among related tasks after a couple of attempts. You'll make more errors during practice, and that's fine. Errorful practice is not a sign the study plan has failed; it's the brain calibrating the boundaries between rules.
Phones and the Hidden Cost of a Distraction That Hasn't Happened
One of the most overlooked effects on studying is simple proximity. In a widely cited experiment by Adrian Ward and colleagues, people whose phones were in another room performed better on tasks requiring working memory than people whose phones were on the desk, even when the phones were face down and silent. The effect is strong enough that a phone outside arm's reach is not a trivial detail.
The phone doesn't need to ping. It only needs to exist as a possible interruption. For study sessions, the practical move is boring: leave the device in another room. Not airplane mode on the desk, not flipped over next to your elbow. That small act removes the pull of a habit that exists even when the screen is dark.
Sleep Is When the Day's Rehearsal Becomes Long-Term Memory
Memory consolidation is not a metaphor. During sleep, the brain reactivates recently learned information and stabilises it. Research by Robert Stickgold and others has shown that sleep after learning improves retention, while sleep deprivation interferes with the process. Staying up two extra hours rereading may feel like gaining time, but the evidence suggests you're missing the part of learning that only happens in bed.
The practical advice is simple: protect the night after you study. A short review before bed can help, but a long new session at 2 a.m. usually costs more than it returns. If you have to choose between another hour of rereading and another hour of sleep, the science lands on sleep more often than people expect.
A Week That Doesn't Look Like Studying but Works Better
If this all sounds less satisfying than an eight-hour colour-coded note session, that's because good study often looks like confusion. Here's a plain weekly loop that puts the principles together.
