1 (one) Research Fellowship (BI) for PhD Student
1 Research Fellowship(s) (BI) is(are) open at the FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, for the project “Realização de campanhas de amostragem e análise de dados relativos à biodiversidade e habitats da zona submareal (entre os 5 e os 20 m de profundidade com recurso a escafandro autónomo) - Fam 1 do Lote 4”, funded by O Agrupamento de Entidades Adjudicantes Municipais, under the following conditions:
- Scientific Area: Marine Biology
- Admission requirements:
(1) Master’s degree in Marine Ecology or a related field;
(2) Driving license for light vehicles - information provided in the CV;
(3) Seaman's license or certification with equivalent qualifications - proven by the respective certification;
(4) Scuba Diving Certification - proven by the respective certification. - Additional optional skills and qualifications:
(1) experience in conducting underwater visual surveys with scuba diving;
(2) experience in using acoustic biotelemetry to monitor fish movements;
(3) experience in carrying out experimental fishing using different fishing gear (gillnets, hook-and-line, pots and traps) to catch fish;
(4) experience of working with fishermen and undertaking sea trips involving on-board monitoring of commercial fishing vessels;
(5) data analysis using R software and geographic information systems;
(6) proficiency in the Portuguese language;
(7) the physical fitness essential for carrying out the duties of the fellowship for which you are applying.
Information provided in the CV. - Contracting requirements: Presentation of the academic qualifications and/or diplomas, if applicable. Enrolment in PhD programme in Marine Sciences.
- Work plan: (1) Carrying out sampling campaigns to monitor fish species and communities; (2) laboratory processing of biological samples collected as part of ongoing work; (3) Conducting field trips to maintain scientific equipment installed in the coastal zone of mainland Portugal and inland waters; (4) Compilation of historical data, both fisheries-related and non-fisheries-related; (5) Compilation, organisation and analysis of data collected as part of ongoing work; (6) Development of content, and participation in and organisation of initiatives to publicise the work; (7) Drafting of working papers and technical reports, and preparation of scientific articles for publication.
- Legislation framework: This call is governed by the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, approved by Law 40/2004, of 18 August, as amended; by the FCT Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships, as currently in force, amended and republished by the Notice (Extract) No. 412/2026/2 (available at: https://diariodarepublica.pt/dr/detalhe/aviso-extrato/412-2026-996320857 and https://www.fct.pt/financiamento/programas-de-financiamento/bolsas/); and by the FCiências.ID Regulation for Research Fellowships, approved on 12 May 2020 (available at Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação Científica da FCiências.ID).
- Place of work: The work will be developed at the MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, under the scientific supervision of Professor Bernardo Silva Ruivo Quintella.
- Fellowship duration: This position is initially opened for 6 months due to start in November 2026. The fellowship contract may be potentially renewed for until the end of the project, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation of Research Fellowships from the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P and FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation.
- Monthly allowance: The fellowship amounts to 1359,64 €, according to table values of the FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, if not covered by any other social protection scheme, pursuant to Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social.
The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer. - Evaluation and selection process: Candidates will be assessed by curricular evaluation 100%.
If necessary, an interview will be conducted with the 3 (three) best candidates. If an interview takes place, the final evaluation will be as follows: curriculum evaluation: 70%; interview: 30%.
Applicants whose application is scored with a final classification of less than 75 points are not eligible for granting a fellowship. - Selection Committee:

Note 1: The documents that prove the entitlement of the academic qualifications and diplomas can be dismissed during the application period and replaced by a declaration on their honour from the applicant (Minuta PT, Minute EN). Their delivery is mandatory for the fellowship contractualization.
