2 Research Grant Announcement (M/F)
Call open for applications for two research grants within the framework of project DiverSea - INTEGRATED OBSERVATION, MONITORING AND PREDICTION ARCHITECTURE FOR FUNCTIONAL BIODIVERSITY OF COASTAL SEAS, with the Grant Agreement nº 101082004, financed by the European Union I the scope of Horizon Europe Framework Programme under the following conditions:
Scientific Area: Mechanics, Electrical and Computers Engineering, Informatics, and related areas.
Admission requirements: Candidates who cumulatively meet the following requirements may apply for this grant:
Requirement 1:
- To be a student enrolled in a master degree or integrated master or in an integrated master's program who has already completed the 180 credits corresponding to the first six curricular semesters in the area of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and related areas, requirement to be proven at the time of signing the contract.
or
- Holder of an academic degree enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, requirement to be proven at the time of signing the contract.
And
Requirement 2:
Hold a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering or related field.
If the degree has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of the Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of august 16th, and any formalities established there must be fulfilled until the time of signing the contract.
Activity Outline:The student will join the DiverSea project team at LSTS – Underwater Systems and Technology Laboratory, contributing to the implementation and development of project activities within the framework of an initial research training phase. The activities will include the development of interoperable ocean missions involving autonomous systems, with a particular focus on the Portuguese continental shelf case study, contributing to the design of new interfaces and methodologies for the automation of planning, coordination, and optimisation of oceanographic operations and surveys.
The fellow will also contribute to the project's management and dissemination activities, in accordance with the guidelines established in the Dissemination Plan.
In particular, the fellow will support the following activities:
WP1 – Development of nucleic acid-based methodologies, integration of field technologies, and application to case studies;
WP5 – Consilience, Public Interface, Communication, Dissemination, and Exploitation.
Legislation and regulations: Law Nº. 40/2004, of 18th August, in its current wording (Statutes of Scientific Research Fellow) and Regulation of Research Grants of University of Porto, in force.
Work place: The work will be developed at the Laboratório de Sistemas e Tecnologia Subaquática - LSTS in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), under the scientific supervision of Professor João Tasso de Figueiredo Borges de Sousa.
Grant duration: Initial duration of 6 months, with the predicted starting date in September 2026, on an exclusive basis eventually renewable but never exceeding the project duration.
If it is not possible to ensure the duration of 6 months estimated in the previous paragraph, this duration will be adjusted according to the end date of the project, and provided that the minimum duration of 3 consecutive months is guaranteed, in accordance with paragraph 2 of article 10 of the Regulation of Research Grants of University of Porto.
The eventual renewal of the scholarship will be carried out as determined in article 10 of the Regulation of Research Grants of University of Porto.
Stipend: The grant stipend amounts to 1090,98€ according to the Regulation of Research Grants of University of Porto. The payment will be made by bank transfer.
Selection procedure:
The curriculum of the candidates (60%) will be evaluated based on the merit of the candidate and the following factors will be weighted:
- a) Academic training (bachelor in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering 10 points; bachelor is related area – 2 points)
- b) Knowledge of Matlab or Python; (up to 1 year - maximum 1 points, more than 1 year - maximum 3 points).
- c) Knowledge in the area of marine robotics or technological systems applied to robotics (maximum of 5 points)
- d) Mastery of the English language, to be checked through a motivation letter (maximum 2 points)
The curriculum of each candidate will be evaluated in a 1-20 points scale. Candidates with less than 15 points in the curricular evaluation will not be invited for the interview.
In the interview (40%) topics related with the work plan, experience and the candidate’s CV will be discussed with the invited candidates.
If none of the candidates achieves a minimum final score of 15 points, the scholarships will not be awarded.
