Academic Advisor
The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) Advising and Academic Services seeks a specialist to support its office and students. This is a continuing, 12 month, 100% time, civil service position. Standard days and hours of work are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. This position is central to the day-to-day success of the office and student support. The incumbent will work closely with all staff members as well as with undergraduate students who are affiliated with the collegiate unit. Salary is dependent on experience and qualifications, and the anticipated salary for this position is $41,620.80 - $43,000.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- ADVISING 50%
- Proactively advise approximately 80 new students through the process of formulating a personalized educational plan, utilizing a variety of academic advising strategies including one-on-one advising
- Monitor student progress and intervene, as needed, with appropriate referrals and resources related to academic difficulties
- Assist in the advising and registration at New Student Orientation
- Be a liaison between students, University officials, and the community
- Establish and maintain connections with assigned departments, programs, and students
- Actively participate in a variety of programs related to student recruitment and resilience
- Serve and actively participate as a representative of our collegiate unit on various committees
- Engage in professional development
- DATA ENTRY and OFFICE MANAGER 40%
- Greet and assist with drop-in traffic - problem solve issues, give directions and information, etc
- Data entry related to student records (change major, minor, advisor, etc)
- Maintain advising records
- Provide spreadsheets as requested
- Serve as assistant to the CAHSS Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) Coordinator - maintain files, update and notify students via email, attend UROP meetings
- Be the 'go-to' person for office repairs, equipment, and service calls
- OTHER duties as assigned 10%
Required/Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years.
- Demonstrated excellent written and organizational skills
- Experience working independently, collaboratively, and under supervision
- Experience with data entry and detail oriented
- Experience with Google Suite and Zoom
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in the liberal arts or fine arts
- Familiarity with the U of MN system, particularly the Duluth campus and academic programs
- Experience working in an educational or related setting
- One or more years of relevant academic advising experience or counseling
- Experience working with complex systems in a fast-paced and structured setting
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated commitment to equal opportunity and diversity issues
- Familiarity with personal and career development issues for undergraduate students
- Experience with advising tools such as PeopleSoft, APAS or other degree-audit systems
