Primary Purpose of the Organization:
The Bronco One Stop is a centralized space for students to access standard student services to strengthen their ability to navigate Fayetteville State University. Bronco One Stop aims to enhance the student experience with the application process, academic records, financial aid, making payments, speaking with an advisor to register for classes, gaining assistance with degree planning, receiving academic support, and navigating university resources.
Fayetteville State University Advising Center's mission is to promote student success by empowering students to achieve their academic and career aspirations. The Advising Center delivers high-quality services by providing support with educational planning, course selection, resource awareness, and success strategies.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The primary purpose of this position is to support the academic success and retention of each incoming first-time freshman cohort throughout their first academic year through proactive monitoring, early intervention, and targeted academic advising. Using a developmental and data-informed advising model, the Freshman Retention Advisor monitors the academic progress of first-time freshmen, identifies and intervenes with students demonstrating academic risk, and provides intensive advising and academic recovery support to students who earn below a 2.0 GPA after their first semester. The position assists students with developing individualized academic success plans, connecting with appropriate university resources, improving academic performance, and maintaining progress toward continued enrollment. Through consistent monitoring, intervention, and follow-up, the position is designed to improve freshman academic performance, persistence, and Fayetteville State University's fall-to-fall freshman retention rate.
This position is funded by non-state funds and has been designated time limited. Continuation of this position is contingent upon the continuing availability of those funds.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements:
Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience in academic advising, tutoring, student support services, social science-related support services, or a closely related area.
Additional Information Regarding Teaching:
Some advisors may be assigned teaching responsibilities based on departmental needs and the employee's education and qualifications, subject to university instructional credential requirements. Eligibility to teach is not a condition of appointment to an advising position.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:
Knowledge: Knowledge of best practices in higher education for enhancing student academic skills;
knowledge of current advising and registration technology; and the ability to help students navigate the various platforms available to them (i.e., Banner, Microsoft Outlook, and Canvas).
Skills: Communication skills to explain, write, advocate for, and report on the needs of the program and academic outcomes; interpersonal skills to interact effectively with students, staff, and faculty;
proficient use of computers, student success technology, Microsoft Office, and Zoom/TEAMS; must be attentive to detail, possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize while multi-tasking and manage tasks in an efficient and timely manner.
Abilities: The ability to respond effectively to unexpected events and make adjustments in plans as needed; listen and analyze academic needs; generate reports on academic progression; navigate student records; answer basic questions about processes and direct students to appropriate resources as necessary; ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships; ability to manage time, work calmly under pressure, and deliver on tight deadlines; ability to work independently and collaboratively with other offices; and a viable candidate must comprehend and abide by federal and university student confidentiality requirements. Ability to work occasionally after 5:00pm and on weekends (especially during peak times).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree.
- Three to five years' experience advising community college and/or university students, particularly exploratory/undecided students.
