Academic Advisor I
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and actively work to maintain a current knowledge of the academic rules and procedures of the University (including processes involving Admissions, the Office of the Registrar, major departments, etc.), Conference, and the NCAA.
- Maintain a working knowledge of university systems, including but not limited to: Slate, DegreeWorks, Connect/EAB, Banner, academic petitions, etc.
- Identify those student-athletes who fall into the category of academically high risk and refer them to the Learning Specialist.
- Assist assigned student-athletes with course selection and eligibility requirements for both major/minors and NCAA eligibility.
- For students who are at risk, meet on a regular basis to develop and carry out individualized academic plans in collaboration with their assigned learning specialist.
- Refer students to the appropriate support services on campus.
- Assist student-athletes in choosing a major(s), minor, or plan of electives that best meet their career goals.
- Maintain student-athlete academic/progress towards degree files.
- Complete team end-of-term academic and eligibility reports under the direction of the Associate Director and/or the Director.
- Identify student-athletes who demonstrate academic success in terms of eligibility for awards.
- Assist in monitoring the established study hall program and report students' hours to coaches weekly.
- Assist the Director of Compliance with the initial and continuing academic eligibility status of student-athletes per NCAA guidelines. Maintain regular and consistent communication with the Athletics Compliance office regarding initial and continuing eligibility.
- Conduct a preliminary review and evaluation of the transcripts of all undergrad transfers for admissibility and eligibility. Determine degree applicability at Charlotte and potential majors to match their career goals, while also maintaining their academic eligibility.
- Teach at least one section of a UCOL course designated specifically for varsity Charlotte student-athletes each academic year.
- Participate in UCOL Instructor training activities.
- Assist with the planning and delivery of the UCOL courses.
Minimum Experience / Education:
Earned a Master's degree by start date and at least one year of working in athletic academic advising.
Preferred Education Skills and Experience:
- 1-2 years as a full-time professional advisor in an academic support program working with NCAA Division I student-athletes, or at least 4 academic semesters working in a similar environment as a Graduate Assistant or post-graduate intern.
- Demonstrate exceptional verbal and written communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with a variety of audiences and stakeholders.
- Documented ability to build bridges and collaborative relationships.
- Knowledge of current best practices related to the delivery of academic services for student-athlete populations.
- The candidate must demonstrate in-depth knowledge of and experience with the educational and cultural needs of a vast student body.
