Job Duties:
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Health Professions and Sciences (CHPS) invites applications for a full-time, probationary leading to indefinite Academic Advisor position. Applicants must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and relate well to a broad audience working toward a goal of attracting, admitting, and enrolling a talented, diverse student body. Advisors will have superb organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple responsibilities, excellent follow-through, ability to work with a team and independently, and an aptitude for detail-oriented tasks are essential. Applicants are expected to have knowledge of academic advising best practices and student development theories.
The Academic Advisor in the College of Health Professions and Sciences (CHPS) engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection, degree requirements, and academic pathways. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. The Academic Advisor works to ensure students interested in nursing receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
All CHPS academic advisors participate in New Student Orientation, Panther Transition Experience which occur in both summer and December/January, advising all CHPS incoming students in an in-person format.
This position requires some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Hybrid work options (minimum of 3 business days on campus each week) may be available with specifics regarding work location requirements discussed during the interview process. This position is required to occasionally support programming during evenings and weekends.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
- Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
- Proactively engages students as needed
- Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
- Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
- Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
- Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources

Compensation:
The target hiring range is $55,000-$60,000 per year. Final salary offers contingent upon skills, knowledge, and abilities as demonstrated throughout the selection process.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (degree must be granted by date of hire).
- 1-2 years of relevant work experience.
- Evidence of excellent written communication skills and attention to detail (based on evaluation of submitted application materials).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Development, or related field.
- 3 years of relevant work experience in academic advising.
- Experience working on a team to create, implement or deliver projects or programming.
- Knowledge of academic advising software (ex: Navigate360, Oracle Peoplesoft, Slate, Stellic).
- Experience with academic planning, career development, and/or retention initiatives.
