Location: Raleigh, NC (Note: This position requires an on campus presence to effectively perform the essential duties of the position.)
Essential Job Duties:
The Academic Advisor provides advising, support, and instruction. In addition, the Academic Advisor serves as a member of the Student Success team, assists with training and supporting faculty advisors, and supports recruitment efforts.
Other Work/Responsibilities:
The Academic Advisor will be responsible for the following areas:
Advising
- Advise first- and second-year College of Education students in a developmentally appropriate way and serve as a Student Services team member supporting student success. This responsibility will require the advisor to be comfortable with a proactive style of advising and coordinating additional support and programming for students of concern.
- Advise potential transfer students as well as on-campus and external transfer students. Represent the College of Education at Transfer recruitment events.
- Advising a caseload is approximately 65% of the position responsibility.
Teaching
- Serve as an instructor for ED 100: Intro to Education (for first year students and transfer students) and assists with course implementation and assessment.
- Teaching is approximately 15% of the position responsibility.
Administration
- Provide additional support as needed for Student Success initiatives (i.e. SAY Village, Professional Growth Units). Provide assistance with programmatic initiatives.
- Act as the advisor for the CED Peer Mentoring Program for first year and transfer students within the College of Education.
- Administration is approximately 10% of the position responsibility.
Professional Development
- Actively seek professional development opportunities to maintain and improve knowledge and expertise in advising, teaching, technology for advising and teaching, and specialty areas. Complete required training in a timely manner.
- Professional Development is approximately 5% of the position responsibility.
Recruitment and Transition
- When needed, work with the College of Education Recruiter to support recruitment efforts, including Phone-a-Thons, Open House, and yield events. Some requirements of the position will require attendance at occasional evening and/or weekend events (i.e. New Student Orientation, Open House).
- Recruitment and transition is approximately 5% of the position responsibility.
Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of the Student Success and Advising Center and the Director of Advising
Note: This is a full-time position located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Due to operational necessity, this role requires regular on-site work. Candidates must be able to commute to NC State's campus to fulfill the position.
Minimum Experience/Education:
- Master's Degree in Higher Education, Counseling or related field.
- Previous experience with teaching and curriculum development either at a K-12 or University level.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience supporting college students from all backgrounds.
- Ability to evaluate complex educational plans for students and work with students to develop meaningful options.
- Ability to collaborate with relevant services and resources to assist the student in problem resolution.
- Awareness of North Carolina Teaching Licensure Requirements.
- Have a working knowledge of current issues facing K-12 education.
