Through personalized guidance, the advisor partners with students to design individualized educational pathways, build strategic academic plans, and stay on track for timely graduation. By engaging in meaningful outreach, encouraging informed decision-making, and supporting students as they overcome challenges, the Academic Advisor helps create a positive, motivating experience that drives persistence, achievement, and long-term success.

The Academic Advisor at Baker College provides comprehensive academic advising to students, guiding them on degree requirements, course selection, academic standing, institutional policies, e-advising tools, and campus resources. In partnership with students, the advisor helps identify and develop realistic, individualized educational pathways and academic plans while encouraging accountability and active engagement in their learning experiences. The role involves proactive outreach using predictive data to support students at key points in the academic year, closely monitoring student progress, and identifying opportunities to strengthen academic success strategies. Academic Advisors collaborate with faculty and campus stakeholders to ensure student needs are addressed promptly while upholding academic policies and integrity. They also help students acclimate to college life by offering holistic guidance that supports effective study habits, personal support systems, and meaningful campus connections. Additionally, the advisor maintains confidential advising records, participates in orientations and institutional initiatives related to student success, serves on campus committees as appropriate, and contributes expertise to support staff and faculty in advancing advising strategies and student outcomes.

Candidates for the Academic Advisor position at Baker College must have a minimum of three years of progressively responsible professional experience in student services or a related field. A bachelor’s degree in a related discipline is required, with a master’s degree preferred, and bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge of student development principles and the purpose of Student Affairs, student success, and academic advising programs. The role requires strong technology skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience with databases, student information systems, or student success management platforms. Candidates must be able to interpret and apply institutional policies and regulations, advise students individually and in group settings on complex academic matters, and demonstrate multicultural competence in supporting diverse student populations. Strong oral and written communication skills, excellent customer service, and strict adherence to confidentiality and ethical standards are essential. The position also requires the ability to manage multiple priorities, work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community partners, adapt to change in a fast-paced environment, think critically under pressure, and independently plan work, solve problems, and exercise sound professional judgment.

The successful candidate will embody and support the student-first philosophy, contributing to the overall success of Baker College while acting as a positive role model and brand ambassador both on and off campus.
