Description of Department:

The purpose of the Educational Opportunity Program is to fulfill New York State's commitment to provide access to higher education for economically disadvantaged students who possessed the potential to succeed in college, but whose academic preparation in high school has not fully prepared them to pursue college education successfully. The primary mission of the EOP is to facilitate the recruitment, enrollment, retention, and graduation of these students. This is accomplished by providing EOP students with an array of educationally related support services and opportunities. Applicants for EOP consideration must also be financially eligible for the program according to the New York State EOP financial eligibility guidelines.

The Educational Opportunity Office at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full time Academic Planning Counselor.

Compensation: Minimum salary - $57,151 commensurate with experience plus full New York State benefits package.

Description of Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic, social, career and graduate school advising to EOP students. Maintain a student advisement caseload up to 105 EOP student advisees during the academic year and up to 40 student advisees during the EOP summer program. Areas of advisement include but are not limited to: academic advising; course selection and registration for majors and undeclared EOP students; transition to college; financial aid concerns; career and graduate school counseling; advocacy; referrals to appropriate campus services and outside agencies as needed.
  • Monitor advisees on warning and disqualification: provide written monthly updates for caseload advisees on academic warning and reinstatement
  • Schedule individual advisement meetings with caseload students to monitor student progress. Meet freshmen students at least three times; sophomores at least twice; juniors and seniors at least one time each semester. Satisfactory completion of established benchmarks.
  • Assist in all aspects of the development, implementation and evaluation of the EOP summer program. Duties include Peer Leader selection, providing specialized workshops and/or programs for students, instruction of summer program courses and collaboration with Summer Program and other SUNY Oswego offices.
  • In collaboration with the Office of Admissions actively patriciate in the conversion of EOP admitted students to deposited students.
  • Participate in the scheduling and registration process for incoming EOP freshmen.
  • In alignment with SUNY Oswego programs and workshops; identify additional resources specific to student needs and concerns. Provide supplemental workshop as needed or designated by the EOPdirector.
  • In collaboration with EOP staff, provide semester evaluation and assessment of programmatic courses and programs; engage in ongoing assessment activities and implementation of recommendations to improve services to students.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience working with historically academic and economic disadvantage students including first generation college students
  • Experience in working with diversity issues/diverse students/multicultural environments
  • Demonstrated involvement with student success program development

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Teaching, or related field
  • Professional experience with EOP, HEOP, TRIO or other Opportunity programs (include graduate assistantship or fellowship experience)
  • Experience in academic summer enrichment programs such as EOP, HEOP, TRIO, and/or CSTEP
  • Experience in data collection and assessment
  • Participation in student retention and persistence initiatives
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with Degree Works, Starfish Early Alert, SLATE CRM and Banner systems
