Job Description:

Budget Title: Senior Staff Assistant (SL-3)

Salary: $57,151

Reporting to the Senior Academic Success Advisor, the Academic Success Advisor supports first-year and continuing students in navigating the academic, personal, and social transitions that shape their university experience. This role combines data-informed advising, proactive outreach, and holistic support to promote retention, persistence, and equitable outcomes.

As a key member of the university's student success network, the advisor collaborates across academic and administrative units to identify at-risk students early, connect them to resources, and build the skills and confidence necessary for long-term achievement.

Core Responsibilities to include, but not limited to:

  • Student Advising and Support
    • Advise a diverse student population, with a focus on first-year students and those experiencing academic challenges.
    • Engage students in reflective conversations that build understanding of degree requirements and university policies.
    • Employ motivational interviewing and strength-based advising to help students set goals and take ownership of their academic journey.
    • Conduct proactive outreach to students identified through early alert systems, predictive analytics, or faculty referrals, ensuring timely engagement and intervention.
  • First-Year Transition and Retention Initiatives
    • Serve as a primary contact for first-year students as they transition to Binghamton University.
    • Partner with orientation and academic departments to ensure a seamless transition from admission through the first semester of enrollment.
    • Track student participation and outcomes to evaluate the effectiveness of first-year initiatives.
  • Data-Informed Practice and Continuous Improvement
    • Use student success dashboards, CRM systems (e.g., Advise, Banner, Degree Works), and data analytics to monitor advising activity, appointment trends, and alert patterns.
    • Maintain detailed advising records and notes in accordance with FERPA and university standards.
    • Contribute to institutional assessment efforts by providing feedback on outreach and student engagement trends.
  • Collaboration and Campus Partnerships
    • Work closely with faculty, deans' offices, and academic support services to coordinate interventions and align advising with curricular goals.
    • Partner with tutoring, success coaching, and wellness units to connect students with comprehensive support.
    • Participate in cross-functional committees or working groups focused on student success and persistence.
  • Professional Development and Leadership
    • Stay current on student success research, advising best practices, and equity-minded strategies in higher education.
    • Engage in professional learning and contribute to an institutional culture of continuous improvement.
    • Support large-scale initiatives such as New Student Orientation, first-year seminars, or academic recovery programs as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, social sciences, or a related field
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in academic advising, student success coaching, or a comparable student support role
  • Effective decision-making, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt in a dynamic environment, manage multiple priorities, and build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

Preferred

  • Experience with higher education technology systems (e.g., Banner, Peoplesoft, CRM Advise, Degree Works)
  • Familiarity with early-alert systems, and data-informed retention strategies
  • Training in motivational interviewing, student development theory, or equity-centered advising
  • Availability to work occasional evenings or weekends during peak advising periods
