PURPOSE
The Academic Success Coach II is responsible for providing our program members with academic mentoring and personal assistance for reaching academic goals at our Target High Schools. The Academic Success Coach II mentors, guides and assists program members to establish goals for a trajectory to gaining a post-secondary degree. The Academic Success Coach II also serves as a liaison to key campus administration to help translate curriculum requirements, assist in degree planning, assist with TSI, SAT, ACT test preparation, and registration, and to explore post-secondary schools, and professional careers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Advising: 80%
  • Provide goal-oriented advising and educational planning, daily. Create purposeful interactions with students and design individualized, student-centered educational plans that lay the foundation for student success.
  • Assist students in establishing goals for high levels of engagement towards academic progress and success.
  • Assist students in understanding academic studies and curriculum requirements for graduation, post-secondary degree planning, including class selection.
  • Assist students in addressing problems and connect them with appropriate community support services/university resources.
  • Convey implications of various policies and procedures related to academic probation and suspension, dropping courses, and satisfactory academic progress.
  • Responsible for early intervention, implementation, and follow-up for students assigned to the program.
  • Communicates with students' parents/guardians effectively about students' academics
  • Keep record and track participation, daily for each student.
College & Event Planning: 15%
  • Coordinate and chaperone the Academic Saturday's, Summer Enrichment Program, weekend community service events, overnight and field trips. Chaperone Summer Academy dorm stay and activities.
  • Provide academic, TSI, SAT and ACT tutoring workshops, including assisting students with registration.
  • Provide information about financial aid and scholarship requirements and processes, as well as other options for financing education.
  • Assist with college applications, FAFSA, and required documents for college admissions.
  • Plan/facilitate parent engagement activities including financial aid and college informational workshops.
  • Provide guidance and assistance re-entering secondary school.
  • Travel to local high schools daily.
Other: 5%
  • Hire, supervise, and train university tutors.
  • Collaborate with University staff and High school staff.
  • Attend yearly TRIO training.
  • Update social media including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Manage membership efforts.
  • Increase student participation within program.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in STEM or applicable field.
  • Two (2) years of experience providing direct, educational-outreach services to disadvantaged students and/or working as an advisor, counselor, or instructor with high school students or related experience.
  • Additional education may be used as a substitute for the minimum experience requirements:
    + Master's degree in STEM or applicable field
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to be able to advise and counsel students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Experience with early intervention, implementation, and follow-up for students while addressing problems and connecting them with appropriate support services on campus.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), office technology, and internet.
  • Ability to travel and work irregular hours during scheduled times including weekends and overnight trips.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with TRIO Program, career, financial aid, and academic advising.
  • Demonstrated success in engaging high school students through innovative and creative teaching strategies.
  • Proficient in classroom management.
  • Coursework and/or training in best practices for increasing retention rates, GPAs, and graduation rates of disadvantaged students.
  • Bilingual capabilities.
  • Knowledge of Zoom to conduct online student meetings.
  • Planning Events/College Prep Workshops.
SALARY: $3,750.00 Monthly ($45,000.00 Annual, Approximately)
NOTE:
  • This is a grant funded position. Continued employment contingent upon available funding.
  • This position has the possibility to be hybrid.
  • Employment may be impacted by the Presidential proclamation issued on September 19, 2025 and the moratorium issued by Texas Governor Abbott on January 27, 2026.
