Position Summary
The Academic Support Specialist is full-time position within the Academic Support for Student Athletes (ASSA) Department, responsible for providing academic support and guidance to identified athletic teams and student-athletes, fostering their educational development and success. This person will serve as the representative for ASSA at the Wister Hall satellite location. The position serves as a mentor for student-athletes, helping them navigate academic challenges, improve their study skills, and develop strategies for time management and exam preparation. The academic mentor will work closely with student-athletes to provide personalized support and encouragement, create individualized academic plans, and serve as a resource for academic questions and concerns.
Essential Duties
Academic Guidance and Support
- Provide direct support to designated student-athletes by developing tailored academic plans and collaborating with coaches and staff to ensure successful implementation.
- Collaborate with students to establish realistic academic goals, monitor their progress, and devise a plan for achieving success in their studies.
- Teach effective study techniques, time management, and organizational strategies to enhance academic performance.
- Encourage and motivate students to maintain a positive attitude towards learning, handle academic stress, and develop resilience.
- Identify and recommend additional academic resources (e.g., tutoring, workshops, study groups) to support students' needs.
Academic Progress and Eligibility Monitoring
- Meet regularly with designated student-athletes to assess their academic progress and provide constructive feedback to help them stay on track and meet their academic objectives.
- Document sessions with students, track their progress and prepare reports on student achievements and challenges to share within the department.
- Respond to early alert notices in a timely manner to ensure student-athletes receive appropriate interventions.
Administrative Duties
- Create and distribute team travel notes.
- Compile and report weekly study hall attendance to coaches and sport administrators.
- Aid in the distribution and collection of scholarship textbooks and course materials.
- Provide support in the transfer admission process as instructed by Associate Director and Director of ASSA.
Secondary Responsibilities
Academic Support for Student Athletes Campus Representative
- Represent the office at open houses, information fairs, orientation activities, and student-athlete enrichment events.
- Provide off-site support for select teams during away competitions as needed.
- Other duties as assigned as institutional knowledge increases.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, or a related field.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in helping students succeed.
- Understanding of the environment of college athletics.
- Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of La Salle University.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree.
- Experience in university-level tutoring, teaching, or academic mentoring.
- Experience working in the collegiate athletic environment.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours
This position may require occasional evening or weekend availability based on student-athlete needs. The role may involve both in-person and virtual mentoring sessions.
