Duties & Responsibilities:
The Division for Academic Success welcomes applications for two (2) Access Specialist positions to work with students to determine appropriate academic accommodations for the health sciences programs. They will review documentation, determine accommodations, and facilitate the implementation of the accommodations, as well as collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to engage in the interactive process supporting students with disabilities.
Please note that one position will focus more on direct services to students, while the other positions will focus more on testing center coordination.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in psychology, counseling, or related field
- Knowledge of disability law (including recent revisions of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act), inclusive educational design, and disability frameworks and their application in higher education
- Direct work experience with students in professional schools of health sciences
- Theoretical & practical knowledge of a variety of disabilities & reasonable accommodations
- Knowledge of technical standards & their application in graduate health sciences programs
- Knowledge of diagnostic testing procedures
- A strong ability to analyze diagnostic testing documentation to determine disabilities and develop reasonable and appropriate accommodations
- Knowledge of study strategies appropriate at the graduate/professional level of education; experience developing learning skills programs
- Ability to work collaboratively in a complex environment
- Ability to develop and deliver presentations to groups of students, faculty, and professional colleagues to increase understanding and awareness of the needs of students with disabilities, and the general population of students enrolled in professional health sciences programs
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in special education, rehabilitation counseling, counseling, psychology, social work, disability, or related areas
- Understanding and applying ADA/Section 504 of Rehab Act to the academic accommodation process
Salary Range: $50,000 – $55,000
FLSA Exemption Status: Exempt
