Job Summary

The University of Utah Campus Store is seeking an Accountant - Internal Audit to support the financial integrity of the Campus Store. This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Finance. The role is responsible for overseeing internal audit activities, monitoring internal controls, and performing comprehensive reconciliations across multiple Campus Store locations. It ensures compliance with university policies, GAAP standards, and applicable regulations while identifying risks, discrepancies, and opportunities for process improvement. The Accountant provides detailed financial analysis, documentation, and reporting to support audit readiness and operational accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and oversee reconciliations of general ledger accounts, bank accounts, procurement cards, POS systems, inventory accounts, and other financial systems.
  • Monitor and evaluate internal controls to ensure financial accuracy, compliance, and appropriate separation of duties.
  • Conduct internal audits of financial transactions, cash handling procedures, inventory processes, and departmental operations.
  • Identify discrepancies and variances, investigate root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure all transactions are properly recorded and supported in accordance with university policies and GAAP standards.
  • Review procurement card activity and purchasing documentation for accuracy and compliance.
  • Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, and financial reports for internal and external audit reviews.
  • Assist in developing, updating, and implementing financial policies and procedures to strengthen internal controls and reduce risk.
  • Collaborate with department managers and leadership to address audit findings and implement corrective measures.
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes, including inventory audit preparation and financial reporting.
  • Provide guidance and training to accounting staff on reconciliation procedures, documentation standards, and compliance requirements.
  • Complete special projects and additional duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Finance.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Accountants (Revenue Recognition), II: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.

Preferences

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Experience in internal audit, financial reconciliation, or compliance-focused accounting roles.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal control best practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems (Oracle-based systems, NetSuite, PeopleSoft preferred).
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Experience in retail operations, auxiliary services, or higher education environments.
