Brunel University London - Brunel Centre for Advance Solidification Technology

Location:Huddersfield
Salary:Up to £45,000 per annum, dependent on experience.
Hours:Full Time
Contract Type:Fixed-Term/Contract

Placed On: 28th October 2025
Closes: 25th November 2025
Job Ref: 598550

Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology (BCAST) – Brunel University of London (BUL) / Wayland Additive Ltd (Wayland)

Location: Unit 7 Park Valley Court, Meltham Road, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, HD4 7BH

Contract Type: fixed-term 36 months.

The Role
This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer or physicist to fast-track their career development as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate. You will undertake a 36-month collaborative project between Wayland (https://www.waylandadditive.com) and BUL. The post will be based predominantly at the company’s premises.

As the KTP Associate, you will design, run and analyse structured melt-strategy experiments on the Calibur3 – a newly designed, developed and built Additive Manufacturing machine at Wayland – for target alloys, linking process parameters to microstructure and mechanical performance.

The Associate will benefit from academic and industrial mentorship, will form part of the applications team, and will work with engineers, software developers, and QA specialists.

Collaborating with Wayland and BUL, you will research and develop customer-specified parts using specialised alloys as a demonstration of Calibur3’s functionality.

The Company
Wayland designs, manufactures and sells highly innovative Additive Manufacturing Machines. Its current customers comprise early adopters / research establishments and manufacturers. Wayland also carries out applications development and provides after sales support, some of which is monetised. Wayland aims to increase machine sales and further monetise its application development activities. Increased revenue will support further inward investment enabling Wayland to expand its manufacturing capabilities.

The University
Brunel University London was established in 1966 and is a leading multidisciplinary research-intensive technology university delivering economic, social and cultural benefits. For more information please visit: https://www.brunel.ac.uk/about/our-history/home.

The KTP is led from within BCAST which is an academic research centre dedicated to fundamental and applied research on the solidification of metallic materials.

Academic advice & supervision will be provided by Dr. Ebad Bagherpour, and Prof. Aamir Khalid.

The candidate
The associate will have a strong technical background in materials science, metallurgy, physics, or mechanical engineering, ideally holding a PhD or an MSc with relevant industry experience.

The successful candidate should have a good grasp of metal Additive Manufacturing, as well as a working knowledge of microstructure - property relationships, mechanical testing, and characterisation techniques such as SEM and EBSD.

Experience in sectors like oil & gas, aerospace, defence, or biomedical is desirable, as is any hands-on experience with AM process development or part validation.

The associate must be comfortable working between a university and a growing technology business, managing tasks across different teams and facilities.

Equally important are strong communication skills, an organised approach to project delivery, and the confidence to work independently.

Benefits
The position offers the following benefits:

  • A £6,000 personal development budget and access to training courses.
  • Access to BUL’s resources.
  • The potential for career development with the company, continuing to lead AM process development beyond the project.

Closing date for applications: 25 November 2025.
