Adjunct Faculty Pool: Science- History of the Universe
Liberal Studies at New York University is seeking a part-time science instructor to teach one section of History of the Universe in Spring 2026. Successful candidates will be contacted on an as-needed basis to fill section openings in the Liberal Studies Core, if and when such openings arise.
The Liberal Studies Core is a dynamic liberal arts curriculum that provides a global and interdisciplinary foundation for nearly 100 NYU majors. The curriculum uses conceptual and spatial frameworks to trace intellectual and cultural currents through the study of texts, works of art, and political and social structures from early antiquity to the present. Small, seminar-style classes ensure the benefits of a liberal arts college within a large urban research university. We are especially interested in hiring qualified candidates who can contribute through their teaching to the intellectual diversity and excellence of the Liberal Studies community.
Course Description
Students in History of the Universe examine the nature of science as a way of looking at the world and study that world as revealed through the work of scientists over the years. They learn about the nature of matter and energy and about how the universe has changed over billions of years. Topics include the origin and development of stars, galaxies, planetary systems, and the universe itself, as well as study of the earth and the development of life on earth and its potential to exist elsewhere in the universe.
The course introduces students to the historical development of astronomy as the "first science", at multiple locations around the pre-modern world. In addition to highlighting the contributions of various thinkers to the concept of the scientific method, students critique the role of human culture and biases in the development and history of astronomy. Students will explore the frontiers of knowledge of astronomy, and acquire an appreciation for the value of multinational collaboration in present-day science.
The currently available course section meets twice weekly, in person, on the following schedule:
