ADJUNCT FACULTY - SPEECH (PART-TIME)

TRUMAN COLLEGE

We at Harry S Truman College are looking to build our pool of talented, dynamic Speech adjunct instructors for the fall semester and beyond. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

Reporting to an assigned Dean of Instruction, the Part-time Adjunct Faculty position conducts formal classes and meets all lab objectives, when applicable, for assigned courses. Part-time Adjunct Faculty teach and evaluate students, prepare and revise course syllabi and other educational materials. Part-time Adjunct Faculty will have demonstrated success in the classroom by developing and using effective teaching strategies that meet students’ diverse needs and engage students in critical thinking and problem-solving. Lastly, Part-time Adjunct Faculty contribute to the overall operation of the College, support the mission of the institute, and employ the philosophical commitment of the community college environment.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instruct in-person classes or online synchronous classes using Zoom.
  • Design activities, assignments, and assessments within courses to meet learning outcomes and promote students’ active participation in their own learning.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in learning and using course-related texts and/or materials, Brightspace learning management system, Faculty Center in my.ccc.edu, and Navigate.
  • Create an effective learning environment that fosters students’ intellectual curiosity and helps them problem solve using discipline-specific thinking strategies.
  • Employ a variety of formative and summative assessments while giving prompt feedback to ensure that classroom instruction leads to student learning and the attainment of the student learning outcomes for the course.
  • Hold office hours before or after class to help students reach their academic, personal and career goals.
  • Foster a classroom environment that respects the diversity of people and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn.
  • Respond promptly to college and department communications and communicate with mentor and assistant chair about challenges as they arise.
  • Participate in department-wide meetings and assessment outside of class time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M. A. in Communications or Speech or Theatre Arts.
  • Teaching experience at the college level preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills required with the ability to communicate persuasively with tact and diplomacy.
  • The ability to work in a culturally diverse work environment.
  • Experience with a diverse, multi-lingual student population desired, as is a commitment to the open access mission of the community college.
  • Has a disposition towards developing the competencies outlined in the City Colleges Academic Excellence Pillars.
  • Knowledge of Brightspace or similar Learning Management System preferred.
  • Prior experience with online teaching (via Zoom) and/or online teaching certification preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office applications.

Salary Range: $800 - $943/contact hour

The rate paid is in accordance with City Colleges approved salary scale.
