Adjunct Instructor - Computer Science at University of the People: The Role and How to Apply

A Remote Computer Science Teaching Contract With No Campus

Most adjunct computer science job ads are written for lawyers, not candidates. This one deserves a closer look because the employer runs without a campus and without lecture halls, and the role is a course-by-course contract rather than a tenure-track appointment. If you know how to read the posting, you'll see exactly what kind of teaching job this is.

You are not applying for a salaried professorship. You are applying for a course-by-course teaching contract at University of the People (UoPeople), an online, non-profit American university. The work is remote, the students are global, and the role lives or dies on how well you communicate in writing.

A Remote Computer Science Teaching Contract With No Campus

University of the People runs its courses asynchronously, which means students and instructors do not need to be online at the same time. For an adjunct instructor, that usually translates to a weekly rhythm: open the week's discussions, grade the previous week's submissions, and stay responsive to student questions inside the learning management system.

Before you write a cover letter, read the full summary at AcademicJobs. It gives you the essential shape of the role without the clutter of a generic university careers page.

What the Work Actually Looks Like

If you have taught in Canvas, Moodle, or Blackboard, the daily flow will feel familiar. UoPeople uses a centralised course design, so you are not building the syllabus from a blank page. Your real job is to make a large online section feel human.

In practice, most online CS adjunct contracts include four kinds of work:

  • Posting discussion prompts and replying to student threads several days per week, not just once on Sunday.
  • Grading programming assignments against a rubric, with comments that tell a student where the logic broke.
  • Answering course messages from students in different time zones within a defined turnaround window.
  • Flagging academic integrity or attendance concerns to a course coordinator when they appear.

None of this is hard to understand. The hard part is doing it consistently while you also keep your industry or family commitments.

Who University of the People Is and Why Its Hiring Model Matters

University of the People was founded in 2009 by Shai Reshef as a tuition-free, non-profit online university based in Pasadena, California. Its accreditation comes from the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC). Instead of tuition, the university lists per-course assessment fees, which students pay at the end of a course, and it publishes those fees on its tuition-free page.

Why should a job applicant care about the student fee model? Because it shapes the classroom. UoPeople recruits students from more than 200 countries and territories, many of them working adults who cannot attend a traditional campus. You will not be teaching a seminar of twenty residential students. You will be managing a section where students log in from different continents, often around work shifts and unreliable internet connections.

What to Ask Before You Invest Time

Here is the uncomfortable truth about adjunct hiring: the longer you wait to ask about pay and workload, the more likely you are to accept a contract that pays less than your grading time is worth. Some universities publish per-course rates. Many do not. UoPeople is not unique in that.

Ask these questions before you submit your final materials:

  • What is the pay per course, and when do payments land?
  • How many students will be in a typical computer science section?
  • What is the expected weekly time commitment, including grading?
  • Are assignments pre-built with rubrics, or will you design and update them?
  • What happens when a student disputes a grade or files an academic integrity complaint?

A hiring coordinator who cannot answer those questions quickly is telling you something useful about how the program treats its contract faculty.

The Application Process, Step by Step

Start with the LinkedIn posting and read the job description before you write anything. It tells you the required degree level, the specific computer science topics the program wants, and the application deadline if one exists.

Then work through these steps:

  • Step 1: Match your graduate coursework and industry experience to the courses listed in the ad.
  • Step 2: Pull together a short academic CV. If yours needs work, the site's guide on writing a winning academic CV is a practical place to start.
  • Step 3: Write a cover note that names two or three courses you can teach right now.
  • Step 4: Ask the program contact about section load and per-course pay before you accept an interview.
  • Step 5: Submit through LinkedIn, and keep a copy of your answers in case you need them for the next opening.

You do not need a creative portfolio. You need a clear, specific application that shows you can teach the course, not just that you once worked as a software engineer.

Five Questions That Separate Serious Candidates From Tire Kickers

Interviewers remember candidates who ask about the actual mechanics of the job. These five questions do more work than any line in a cover letter:

  • How is academic integrity handled in a fully online programming course?
  • What is the typical student failure or withdrawal rate, and what support exists for struggling students?
  • Will you have a teaching assistant or grader, or are you responsible for every line of feedback?
  • How are instructor course evaluations used in contract renewal decisions?
  • What is the expected turnaround time for replying to student messages during the week?

If the interviewer answers in specifics, you are talking to a programme that runs online teaching like a real operation. If they wave the question away, that tells you something too.

How This Role Fits the Adjunct Computer Science Market

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of postsecondary teachers to grow by about 8 percent from 2022 to 2032, faster than the average for all occupations. You can see the specifics on the Bureau's occupational outlook page. But the headcount story for computer science adjuncts is more complicated than that number suggests.

Industry salaries pull experienced developers away from teaching. That creates a real opening for people who can explain recursion, data structures, or database design to a student who is stuck at midnight. Online programmes like this one compete for that small pool of instructors who combine subject fluency with the patience to write clear, useful feedback every single week.

Your Next Move This Week

Do one thing this week. Open the posting, write down the exact courses and programming languages you can teach from day one, and send a one-page application. If the pay is not listed, don't sit on the question. Ask the programme coordinator before you invest another hour in materials.

The strongest candidates don't wait for the perfect job ad. They apply early, ask directly about pay and workload, and make the hiring team's decision easy.
