Advanced Quantum Testbed Research Scientist

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (Berkeley Lab) Applied Math and Computational Research Division (AMCR) has an opening in the QuIST (Quantum Information Science and Technology) Group for Research Scientist in support of The Advanced Quantum Testbed (AQT) project as well as future Quantum Information Science and Technology efforts.

The AQT program is focused on constructing, enhancing, operating, and maintaining an open, fully accessible gate-based quantum computer. Our technology platform is based on superconducting quantum circuit processors, and we aim to generate the detailed experimental findings needed to resolve foundational questions in quantum information science, and to guide near-term hardware and algorithm co-design.

What You Will Do:

  • Characterization of noise and errors (including non-Markovian errors) in superconducting qubits.
  • Large-scale benchmarking of full-stack QPUs.
  • Design of superconducting electronic devices with emphasis on superconducting quantum processors with emphasis in qubit crosstalk mitigation and overall processor fidelity improvement.
  • Fabrication of superconducting electronic devices with emphasis on superconducting quantum processors.
  • Device characterization and optimization.
  • Design and conduct state-of-the-art experiments such as superconducting quantum processors.
  • Troubleshoot noise processes on quantum hardware and design and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Validate, analyze, and interpret experimental data.
  • Supervise group post-doctoral candidates and graduate students as required.
  • Operating, optimizing and maintaining a dilution refrigerator for state-of-the-art superconducting quantum processor operation.
  • Assist with proposal writing.
  • Participate in developing new funding initiatives as needed.
  • Publish scientific papers and give presentations.

What is Required:

  • Typically requires a Ph.D. degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field and a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in design of superconducting electronics and quantum processors.
  • Experience in fabrication of superconducting electronics and quantum processors.
  • Experience independently planning and completing projects.
  • Design of and experience in state-of-the-art experiments with superconducting quantum processors.
  • Experience operating, optimizing and maintaining a dilution refrigerator for state-of-the-art superconducting quantum processor operation.
  • Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and verbal presentation of scientific results.
  • Knowledge of quantum information science related to one or more of the responsibilities/research areas listed above.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students.
  • Ability to direct the work of technical support staff or students.
  • Ability to prepare periodic updates (written and oral) for internal and external reviews or reports.
  • Experience using Python based programming tools.

This is a full time, 5 year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. The targeted salary range of this position is between $155,000 to $165,000 per year depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience. Work will be primarily performed at University of California, Berkeley, CA.
