Santa Fe Colleges (SF) Charles R. and Nancy V. Perry Center for Emerging Technologies is located in Alachua, Florida, the heart of Florida's high-tech corridor, about 13 miles from SF's Northwest Campus. The Perry Center provides citizens of northern Alachua County an opportunity to receive a college education close to home. The Perry Center focuses specifically on emerging technology degrees. The 30,000 square foot building opened in 2009 and has state-of-the-art laboratories and fully equipped technology classrooms. The Perry Center is located across the street from Progress Park, a growing industrial complex anchored by the University of Florida's Sid Martin Biotech facility.
The Advising Specialist is responsible for providing direction, information, personal attention, care and support to students in Alachua and surrounding counties in the development of their academic and career goals. Advising specialists also provide guidance on the requirements needed to apply to one of SFs limited enrollment programs. Additionally, the Advising Specialist collaborates with the Perry Center Director, Academic Chairs, and department Directors to plan and implement recruitment initiatives. This position will also provide advising support for health science programs located at the main NW campus as needed. Travel between locations may be necessary to best assist students.
Job Description
Responsibilities and Duties Include:
- Assists and participates in all advisement efforts, including pre-requisite and program course academic advisement, using various modes of communication (ex: Navigate, Microsoft Office), embracing progressive advisement and student success in a technology rich environment.
- Tracks students progress into their program of study and provides guidance and assistance as needed.
- Interprets and explains requirements for vocational certificates, terminal and transfer degrees.
- Responds to student inquires and requests in for information in a prompt and efficient manner via phone, email, zoom, social media, etc.
- Participates and engages in recruitment and marketing initiatives across Alachua and surrounding counties to include educational institutions and community programs; supports recruitment efforts at other SF locations as assigned.
- Speaks to small and large groups of potential students and others, explaining programs, career opportunities, educational and career lattices and employment potential.
- Processes and evaluates application and admissions materials from potential students, responding appropriately in a timely manner.
- Works with Academic Chairs and staff to maintain accurate student records, strictly honoring the privacy and security of student records and other sensitive information according to appropriate state, federal and college regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Maintains positive and close relationships with Academic Chairs to ensure a smooth admissions process, assist students with registration and enrollment issues, monitor student progress, provide accurate and timely data, and coordinate tours.
- Completes reporting requirements for internal and external stakeholders.
- Networks with area schools and industry partners.
- Collaborates with SFs Counseling Center, Career Resources Center, Office for Admissions, High School Dual Enrollment, and other offices across campus to support students continued success.
- Works as a positive and effective team member in a dynamic environment.
- Provides service to the college through participation in events, committees, and other college activities.
- Complies with all published College Rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws/regulations governing public employees, including but not limited to those related to document retention and destruction, FERPA, and confidentiality.
- Strictly honors the privacy, security, and confidentiality of records and other sensitive information according to appropriate state, federal, and college regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Provides service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Reports to: Chair, Biotechnology, Dental, and Pre-Health Sciences Programs
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: A bachelors degree in education or a relevant field with two (2) years of experience in academic advisement, student affairs, student services, counseling, mentoring, or recruitment or a combination of education and experience equal to six (6) years is required.
Additional Requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted. Must be able to lift/carry up to 20 pounds without assistance. Applicants must have a valid Florida Class E Operator (drivers) license and be authorized to drive for the college.
