The AFAM PhD in Music, Design, Art, Territories proposes an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary training project that aims to explore the connection between the arts, understood in their most inclusive meaning (theoretical and practical), and territories. This link was already widely present in the early medieval noun ars, which referred to the sphere of knowledge on which the knowledge of that distant era rested: the so-called liberal artsdefined the intellectual creative activities (triviumand quadrivium) that coexisted alongside the mechanical arts, the manual ones. Today we decline the term "art" in a different, creative and productive way, identifying it first and foremostwith the nouns Music, Design, Art present in the 'inclusive' title of this Doctorate. Although referring primarily to the inventive sphere, the intention is to recover for the term "art" its polysemic and semantically multifaceted connotation, the result of patient individual work, craftsmanship, the peculiar history of the places, as well as pure creative inspiration. "Art" also means the interweaving of culture and skills, of visions that pass from music to the design of shapes and contours, bounce towards pictorial art, touch places and take root there. "Art" means the interweaving of awareness and emotion, the basis of the mutually 'resonating' sense on which the arts protagonists of this Doctorate are nourished. Hence the need for a 'round' training curriculum that touches on them all, and that provides the doctoral students of the course with a vision that is as broad and stimulating as possible.

POSSIBLE RESEARCH TOPICS
Without prejudice to the candidates' full freedom of choice regarding their proposed research topics, the areas indicated below reflect some scientific orientations valued by the Selection Committee. None of the following topics constitutes a requirement for participating in the selection process or for proposals submitted to the PhD in Music, Design, Art, Territories. Proposals may therefore depart entirely from the following themes and focus on topics that differ significantly from those listed below, without in any way affecting the evaluation of the candidate or their project.
State Conservatoire of Music "Giulio Briccialdi" of Terni
- Early music: sources, performance practice, and interdisciplinary perspectives between ancient and contemporary.
Sources and performance practices of early music. This research line encompasses the study of how the relationship between historical sources and performance practices can generate new and original approaches to early music repertoire. - Relationships between early and contemporary music: interdisciplinary practices and perspectives.
This research line encompasses the study of how early repertoire is reinterpreted, revisited, or brought into dialogue by contemporary composers and performers, and conversely how contemporary practices and languages can shed light on the understanding of early repertoire.
State Conservatoire of Music "Giovanni Battista Pergolesi" of Fermo
- Styles, connections, and transformations in 20th- and 21st-century music
The proposed theme invites the investigation of styles, connections, transformations, and histories in international music across the 20th and 21st centuries through interdisciplinary perspectives. These may include one or more lines of inquiry: for example, research of a musicological and theoretical nature, focused on the historical-critical reconstruction of musical languages and their developments; research of a compositional nature, attentive to poetics, techniques, and creative processes; or research of a performative, scenic, and dramaturgical nature, focused on the realization and staging of the musical text. Alongside these, candidates may explore intersections with the visual arts, poetry, literature, and other forms of artistic expression and cultural reflection. Candidates are free to focus on a single perspective or operate within the shared dialogue among them.
State Conservatoire of Music "Ottorino Respighi" of Latina
- History of music theory between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (Regole, Lezioni, Gramatiche, Compendi, etc.): didactic implications, thoroughbass theory, and the influence of rhetoric on musical discourse.
- The use of Italian musical folklore (authentic or idealized, modern or traditional) in the symphonic and operatic output of the composers of the "Generation of the Eighties" (Generazione dell'Ottanta).
State Conservatoire of Music "Lucio Campiani" of Mantua
- The organ tradition and polyphony: sources, tablatures, transcriptions, and performance practices in the history of keyboard idioms.
This theme investigates organ and keyboard repertoire and literature in relation to polyphony, vocality, orchestration, and counterpoint across historical periods. The research scope embraces interdisciplinary perspectives and diverse chronological horizons. Candidates will have full freedom to focus their research on a specific repertoire (from early music to the nineteenth century or the contemporary period), moving freely between theory and practice.
