About This Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Analytical Chemist to join our world-class research team at Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences (QAEHS).
In this role, you will support the Centre's research and related consultancy activities through the provision of analytical and technical support for target and non-target analysis and instrument maintenance. The successful candidate will have significant experience and expertise in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS and LC-HRMS), including method development, instrument maintenance, and data analysis workflows for both targeted and suspect screening applications.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Scientific and Technical Expertise: Provide advanced analytical expertise, develop and validate new methods, optimise workflows (including LC-QToF), and contribute to high-quality research outputs and proposals.
- Instrument & Laboratory Management: Manage and maintain equipment and instruments including LC-MS/MS and LC-HRMS, oversee sample tracking and data systems, and maintain accurate documentation.
- Leadership, Training & Mentorship: Mentor junior staff, deliver technical training, and contribute to leadership meetings and innovation initiatives.
- Safety & Compliance: Lead a proactive safety culture, ensure compliance with OH&S standards, manage risk assessments, and support quality assurance and continuous improvement activities.
About You
- Completion of a postgraduate qualification with at least 4 years subsequent relevant experience; extensive experience and management expertise in a technical field; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training in an appropriate discipline.
- Demonstrated research-relevant experience with analysis of complex matrices for a wide variety of organic chemical compounds, particularly environmental contaminants.
- Demonstrated knowledge of trace analytical chemistry and organic chemistry.
- Demonstrated experience in the use and maintenance of laboratory analytical instruments, including High Resolution Mass Spectroscopy (HRMS) and Tandem Mass Spectroscopy (MS/MS) instrumentation, for target compound identification.
- Advanced technical capabilities and experience in the analysis and interpretation of analytical data (i.e. decipher chromatograms and identify peaks) for target approaches.
- Proven ability to manage, lead and develop staff, including other technical staff within a research team environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to produce clear, succinct research documentation and the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of research and scientific staff.
- A commitment to upholding the highest standard of research integrity, ethics and workplace health and safety.
- Operational experience with Sciex, Thermo and Shimadzu instruments would be highly regarded.
