Position Highlights

This position is responsible for all aspects of routine animal husbandry including feeding, watering, maintaining facility cleanliness, continual observation of health and wellbeing of horses, sheep, and cattle, and maintaining records. The successful candidate will ensure areas where animals are housed are clean, safe and compliant with policies from IACUC and the University. The successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, strong work ethic, ability to adjust to changing environments, and the ability to function within a collaborative team.

This position is currently located at Al Marah Equine Center (AMEC) at 4101 N. Bear Canyon Road; however, the position will move over to the Campus Agricultural Center (CAC) at 4101 N. Campbell Avenue before August 2026. The position is a five day 8-hour work schedule that will require the successful candidate to be willing and able to be flexible in scheduling, including coverage of evenings, weekends, and holidays, which is shared with co-workers.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform daily cleaning of housing areas a minimum of once daily, applying established facility and IACUC standards to identify and address safety or sanitation issues.
• Perform regular cleaning of feed and water containers according to established protocols and document or report any issues observed.
• Perform regular cleaning of horse stalls in alignment with AMEC husbandry standards, independently checking for hazards or maintenance needs.
• Ensure that stalls and enclosures are safe and compliant with IACUC regulations where indicated by conducting routine condition checks and initiating corrective actions or promptly escalating concerns.
• Provide daily animal husbandry to horses that are housed in stalls, turnouts and pastures, applying established care standards and monitoring for changes in condition or behavior.
• Perform feeding a minimum of twice daily in accordance with prescribed rations and schedules, verifying feed intake and noting variances.
• Freshen or fill water a minimum of twice daily, confirming water availability and cleanliness and reporting or addressing issues as needed.
• Assist with oversight and assessment of animal well-being by independently observing horses for health, behavior, and environmental concerns and determining when to escalate to veterinary or supervisory staff.
• Assist with other duties that support AMEC activities and ensure wellbeing of horses at AMEC, including applying established AMEC procedures, coordinating routine care tasks as directed, and communicating observations or issues that may impact animal well-being or program operations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Skill in handling and working with horses, sheep, and cattle.
• Ability to catch and place a halter on a horse, and to lead, and groom a horse.
• Ability to effectively communicate.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to lift/move/transport up to 50 pounds.
• Work in environment that requires continuous bending, stooping, twisting, and turning.
• Work in environment that requires working outside in extreme heat, cold, and other outside elements.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• 3 years of experience feeding and caring for large animals, including cleaning stalls.
• Ability to drive a truck according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with driving a trailer.
