Application of digitally controlled traction power supplies to improve efficiency and reduce cost of railway 25kV traction power systems
About the Project
Digitally controlled power converters, renewables and battery technologies have transformed power grids and trains but have not penetrated 25kV railway traction power supplies. Supplementation of legacy supplies requires novel control approaches; and the absence of an existing centralised railway power grid presents opportunity for novel, higher efficiency control of large power converter fed railway areas. The high cost of large railway power supplies demands novel approaches be proven by creation of digital twin prior to prototyping and delivery.
This PhD will leverage Siemens Mobility’s industry leading railway modelling expertise, data from novel power electronics equipment and existing UoY work on AI optimisation of power grid efficiency. The project will develop novel control solutions for parallel operation of power converters and transformer derived supplies on 25kV railway systems to enable flexible integration of renewable, battery and grid derived supplies considering energy efficiency, timetable performance benefits and grid code compliance requirements.
How to Apply:
Applicants should apply via the University’s online application system. Please read the application guidance first so that you understand the various steps in the application process.
Funding Notes
This PhD studentship will cover the tuition fee at the home rate (£5,006 for the 2025/26 academic year), an annual stipend at the standard research council rate for a period of up to 4 years (£20,780 for the 2025/26 academic year) and a research training and support grant (RTSG). Funded through an EPSRC Industrial Doctoral Landscape Award (IDLA) in partnership with Siemens, it includes an additional £4,000 per year stipend uplift.
There are also a limited number of full studentships in the School (covering the international fee) which are available for exceptional candidates of any nationality; International applicants are therefore also welcome to apply. Please note funding for international fees is in competition with other projects.
