Job Summary
Caltech’s Kerckhoff Marine Laboratory (KML) is seeking an occasional Aquatics and Administrative Assistant that will support the on-site aquatic life support systems and facilitate education and outreach programs. Under the direct supervision of the KML Manager, this role will assist with troubleshooting lab equipment, provide regular maintenance of systems, and assist with general lab activities (both research and education). Hours and schedule will fluctuate based on the needs of the lab.
Essential Job Duties
- Maintain facility aquatic life support systems (seawater intake, filtration, and aquariums).
- Provide backup support to Lab Manager as necessary, assisting with operational tasks.
- Coordinate and facilitate training for lab volunteers.
- Assist with lab education and outreach tours and programs.
- Provide coordination and oversight for lab events, ensuring all established protocols are followed and volunteers adhere to required procedures. Promptly engage the Lab Manager when issues arise or when guidance is needed to resolve concerns.
- Assist with lab advertisements and social media programming.
- Assist Lab Manager with projects as needed.
Basic Qualifications
- At least 1 year of experience in aquatic husbandry and education.
- Experience working with K-12 grade students.
- Minor plumbing, electrical, and carpentry skills.
- Ability to multitask various projects.
- Ability to work well with others.
- Must be able to work occasional weekends.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 3 years of relevant experience.
- Strong understanding of aquatic life support systems and equipment.
- Open Water SCUBA Certification.
- Experience working on boats and in the water.
- Ability problem-solve quickly under pressure.

Hiring Range
$22.00 - $26.25 Per Hour
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
