Position Highlights

The Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix seeks to hire assistant, associate, or full professors in the broad areas of immunology and related disciplines. The positions report directly to the department chair.

The Department of Basic Medical Sciences at the College of Medicine - Phoenix is undergoing a significant, strategic expansion of its research enterprise. The department seeks to recruit two new tenure-track faculty members at the ranks of assistant, associate, or full professor to complement and enhance the current cadre of highly innovative, collegial, collaborative, and well-funded faculty within the department and the college. The research foci in immunology, inflammation, and/or systems biology of the immune and inflammatory systems will enhance the department's existing strengths, including neuroscience, cancer, immune, metabolic, and cardiovascular diseases. Through discovery, education, and service, the BMS faculty strive to be leaders in their areas of scholarship. Our blended faculty creates a unique environment for cutting-edge, innovative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research to investigate fundamental biological questions and develop solutions to challenges in cancer, immune, metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurological diseases. Our investigative team also collaborates with clinical researchers to facilitate the development of novel diagnostics, therapies, and preventive measures. BMS faculty are engaged in medical and graduate education by developing, delivering, and assessing curricula, and by conducting educational scholarship to support the college's educational mission.

This position includes overseeing and conducting an independent research program, collaborating with other faculty, conducting programmatic research, publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals, pursuing and securing extramural funding, and taking on duties and responsibilities that demonstrate strong service to the department and the college. This may include serving on committees, coordinating, overseeing, or assisting with specific aspects of departmental operations. The candidate will attend faculty, lab, and subgroup meetings and contribute meaningfully to research projects that will lead to independence as well as to collaborative projects.

The successful candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member within the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, actively participate in teaching, service, and scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor. The successful candidate will meet the requirements for a tenure-track faculty member as outlined by the College and University.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative and collaborative immunology-related research.
  • Obtain extramural, including federal, support for research programs and publish high impact scientific research in the broad areas of immunology-related research.
  • Develop collaborations with pertinent faculty within the College and partner institutions; for senior candidates, lead larger programmatic initiatives (P, U and similar grants) in their and related fields.
  • Contribute to the teaching (medical, graduate and/or other education), mentoring and service components of the College's missions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience mentoring students and trainees in research projects.
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication and professionalism skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Hold an MD, PhD or MD/PhD or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution in biological sciences, medicine or a related field.
  • Exhibit a track record of high impact publications (all candidates), extramural research funding (preferrable for assistant professors, mandatory for other ranks) and teaching (associate and full professor level).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrate innovation and federally-funded (rank-appropriate) research in immunology and/or systems immunology.
  • Have a strong track record in teaching and mentoring in classroom or laboratory settings (rank-appropriate).
  • Have experience in an academic medical center and medical education environment.
  • Exhibit a strong record of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals.
  • Demonstrate experience with new techniques and approaches not currently available at the College of Medicine - Phoenix.
  • Have experience serving on the editorial board of a peer-reviewed scientific journal (rank-appropriate).
