The Immunology Center of Georgia (IMMCG) represents a new initiative by the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University to leverage the ability of the immune system to combat disease. The IMMCG will accomplish this by assembling teams of biomedical researchers with strong records of scientific innovation and technological development. The IMMCG will be co-directed by world-class immunologists Drs. Catherine Lynn Hedrick and Klaus Ley, both of whom have made major discoveries linking immune cells to specific mechanisms of disease. The goal of the IMMCG is to produce novel and effective treatments for conditions that heavily impact the communities of Georgia and the United States. The new center is aggressively recruiting faculty and staff to lead projects focused on cardiovascular disease, obesity and metabolic disorders, autoimmune and infectious disease, neurodegenerative disease and cancer.

Job Summary

A training position designed to learn through engagement in an advanced level of scientific, technical, and administrative work in support of research efforts in an assigned laboratory or clinical research setting. Participate in research data collection and documentation within relevant guidelines and protocols, develop and evaluate new research techniques and procedures, and publish results in scientific journals. Perform a variety of complex chemical, biological, cytologic, microscopic, histologic, surgical, clinical, statistical/computational, and dissection procedures.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities to include, but are not limited to:

  • Participate in project planning and development of research protocols while ensuring adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines.
  • Analyze results of experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques and, if necessary, develop special computer programs to facilitate analysis. Teach and participate in complex immunological, chemical, and molecular qualitative and quantitative analysis, histologic, and cell culture procedures, and animal procedures.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants, and other research personnel engaged in research activities and/or related laboratory work.
  • Compose articles for publication in scientific journals and review articles prepared by others.
  • Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature, summarize and evaluate findings, and develop derivative applications of techniques developed by own research activities or reported by other research projects. Present findings at scientific meetings locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, repair, and operate microscopes, computer-linked analytical equipment, dedicated computers, and other complex scientific equipment. Instruct others in operation of equipment.
  • Advise principal investigator, other postdocs, students, and other research personnel on research techniques, procedures, and other technological aspects of research activities.
  • Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. degree from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with neutrophil developmental and/or functional biology, animal models of cancer, multi-color flow cytometry, and transcriptome analysis backgrounds are highly encouraged to apply.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

KNOWLEDGE
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.

SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
This position is (fully/partially) funded through external sources. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of these funds.
